MODERN FAMILY Brings Laughs and Love in Season 8 on DVD

Modern Family bluray

Jeri Jacquin

Now available on DVD is the Emmy Nominated zany family that has worked its way into America’s hearts as 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment delivers a MODERN FAMILY.

The Dunphy family is still living the life in New York and everybody wants to stay a little longer. The same might not be said for the hot sauce business when family is involved. Gloria (Sofia Vergara) is about to go ballistic when her sister takes things into her own hands.

Back home a new family moves into the neighborhood about the same time Jay (Ed O’Neill) is putting in security for the house. Worried that the new family might see his move as a bit racist, he takes his nervousness a bit too far. Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) have to rethink their open parenting a bit when Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) makes a comment towards a transgender boy.

Manny (Rico Rodriguez) is running for class president and Luke (Nolan Gould) is thinking about doing the same thing. Oh kids! Jay and Gloria are trying to help manner and make Claire (Julie Bowen) their manager and Haley (Sarah Hyland) is thinking now she wants her own company too.

mod 1

Trying to help Manny get into Julliard, Jay works with him to produce a video application to get the attention of the selection committee. Cam has a house guest that isn’t making either Mitchell or Lily happy but it’s Lily who is going to do something about it.

Halloween is here and the Dunphy family comes together to help Luke with his party bringing unexpected guest Rod Skyhook into the mix. With all the family madness Jay heads off to his favorite place, the country club, to unwind and take a minute. Finding out that Phil (Ty Burrell) wants to be a member isn’t setting too well with Jay. Claire thinks she is helping Alex (Ariel Winter) but it might not turn out that way.

The next family holiday is here as Thanksgiving brings Cameron his chance to do it up right. The first sign of trouble is when Haley announces she would rather spend the day with her boyfriend. All Jay can do is watch the family do what they do best – make him crazy. If running for the same office wasn’t enough, the winter dance brings Manny and Luke working together. Of course the parents are deciding their futures on the side as well.

Hearts and flowers are the order of the day but Claire thinks maybe a little magic is needed for her and Phil’s special day. Cupid is making his rounds as well when it becomes clear that Ben may have a tiny little crush on Claire!

mod 2

Phil is looking to invest in some property and Jay is his target partner. That’s the least of his worries when Jay discovers that Gloria has hired a new handyman who seems to be handier than Jay would like.

It’s getting closer to wedding and time for Frank’s bachelor party with Phil waiting to meet the new family member. If he isn’t busy enough he also volunteers to play basketball at a charity game with two NBA players who aren’t going to baby him.

Frank’s wedding may have a 1920’s theme but it seems Phil gets it wrong when asking Claire to era dress up for the occasion with crazy results. Added to that it seems the couple is going through empty nest syndrome.

All of that culminates to graduation day for Manny and Luke which means the entire family gets together to celebrate. Of course if you think everything goes beautifully then you obviously don’t know this particular MODERN FAMILY!

mod 4

Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara are hilarious together and it is mainly because as different as they may be, they are also absolutely perfect for one another. That means if these two can pull off a relationship then so can Claire and Phil, along with Mitch and Cameron. All of their relationships have their ups and downs yet these three couples remind us that it’s just one foot of love in front of the other to make it believable.

The kids are hilarious but at the same time fall in line with what kids all around me are up to. Of course some of their antics are exaggerated and I think some of it wouldn’t fly with parents I know but it doesn’t make it any less enjoyable to watch. The relationships with the parents are at that point where the kids want to be older than they are and make grown up decisions. The parents seem to have other plans though.

Special appearances by Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, Peyton Manning, Victor Garber, Charles Barkley, DeAndre Jordan

That’s 472 minutes of family time!

MODERN FAMILY is a television show that has embraced the diversity and differences of families without forgetting that we all have craziness in our ranks. I love that the characters have relatibility about them because, honestly, I know someone like each one of the Dunphy’s in my own family.

Perhaps that is what brings us together to embrace this series. We do know these characters and we get to laugh, share and love their journey because it parallels our own. No one said life was easy but having family can make the difference between not having a family at all or adding MODERN FAMILY to our own. I’m thinking we just add the Dunphy’s to our own – happily!

The show continues to be a television favorite with their 10th season starting Wednesday this fall on ABC.

In the end – they may be modern but they are definitely a family!

FINDING DORY Swims Easy into Hearts and Now Homes!

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray from directors Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane and Disney Pixar is the highly anticipated reason to keep on swimming with FINDING DORY.

Back on the reef, Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) has made a life with Nemo (Hayden Rolence) and Marlon (Albert Brooks). Her memory hasn’t improved very much but everyone on the reef knows the little Tang’s story.

While out with the reef with Mr. Ray and the class, Dory has a memory that sets her on fire. She remembered her parents Jenny (Diane Keaton) and Charlie (Eugene Levy) and more remarkably where she last saw them. Dory knows that she must go to them right away and turns to Marlon and Nemo for support.

dory-1

Of course Marlon isn’t to keen on another big sea adventure but realizes that this is something Dory needs to do. Calling on Crush and the shelled gang, they hitch a ride to Morrow Bay in California following Dory’s memories.

Arriving at the Marine Life Institute, Dory, Marlon and Nemo become separated when she is scooped up by scientist and taken in the building. Dory is tagged and that’s when she meets Hank (Ed O’Neill), an octopus with one goal in life – to get tagged. After talking to Dory, Hank realizes this is his chance!

The two set out on an inside adventure as Dory remembers more and more bringing her closer to the last place she saw her Mom and Dad. Outside, Marlon and Nemo are discovering that sometimes you need special help from unlikely friends to get inside the Institute. Marlon’s fears for his son almost get the better of him until Nemo tells him to think like Dory which is a game changer.

Dory also finds her childhood friend Destiny (Kaitlin Olson), a whale shark that has a problem with her eyesight. That doesn’t stop her from being excited to see Dory again. In the next tank is Bailey (Ty Burrell), a neurotic white beluga whale who thinks his biological sonar doesn’t work.

When Dory comes within fins reach of her childhood home, she learns that the search isn’t over. That’s when old friends and new friends who believe in the little blue tang won’t let her give up – because what do you do when you feel that way?

That’s right…

dory-4

DeGeneres is and always will be Dory. I absolutely adore this character because of her ability to be so accepting of almost everything around her. Granted she doesn’t remember much of what’s around her but there is a grace and purity to the fact that she doesn’t remember. In that are no preconceived notions, no judgments, and no history of bad feelings and in its place is a free floating swimmers joy, love, understanding and acceptance with an added warm wrapping of friendship and family. Thanks Ellen for reminding us all that it is possible to be all those things. Thirteen years later I am proud to introduce my granddaughter to the love and hilarity that is Dory!

Brooks as Marlon is once again on the fright train but not nearly as bad as before. Once again son Nemo reminds him that fear does nothing but keep them from every bit of life – even the bird-carrying-bucket kind! Rolence as Nemo comes in strong and a little more grown up from his crazy adventure. Still adorable and still cute as a clown fish can be!

O’Neill as Hank is absolutely hilarious and as grumpy as he wanted to be, Dory managed to untangle his heart. I have a sneaking suspicion I know which character is going to be a show stealer of this film and I have no problem with that at all (she says heading to the Disney store to get the Hank stuffed animal immediately!).

Keaton and Levy as Jenny and Charlie are so cute that I couldn’t absolutely stand it. Flashbacks of Dory as a baby tang (be prepared to awwwwww yourself like crazy!), Keaton and Levy are loving and supportive of their baby girl and it carried them one shell at a time back to her.

Olson as Destiny is hilarious and thrilled to find Dory once again. She just has such a light personality that is strong but mushy at the same time. Burrell as Bailey is adorable and neurotic all wrapped up in the white beluga whale package. Just watching him panic made me laugh because that’s probably what I look like minus the ability to have sonar.

The film includes Sloane Murray as young Dory, Eugene Levy as Charlie, Idris Elba as Fluke, and Dominic West as Rudder.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment began distributing under its own label in 1980 and continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. Home of the most beloved animated features including SNOW WHITE, PINOCCHIO and SLEEPING BEAUTY to name a few is what keeps families coming back for more. dory-3

FINDING DORY is a must-have to set proudly next to FINDING NEMO. DeGeneres should be extremely happy with the end result of her little tang’s story. Seeing Dory again and again is heartwarming, very funny, and challenging but all wrapped up in love, determination and believing in herself.

Dory is such an inspiration to everyone, not just children, and FINDING DORY is an opportunity for us all to come together and experience her return. At the screening I can tell you there were more adults attending than children. That’s because FINDING NEMO appeared in 2003 and we’ve all been waiting with Ellen for her return and nothing is going to stop Dory’s followers from sharing her journey.

It has been a wait but one that is totally worth it. The animation is absolutely stunning with such rich colors and a flow that is a feast for the eyes. The story is one that needed to be told and with the addition of the new characters I can guarantee an enjoyable family time at the movies.

The Bluray, DVD and Digital HD package includes over two hours of bonus features including the theatrical short Piper which I absolutely love but there are also new mini-shorts. More extras include Marine Life Interviews as MLI residents remember our favorite blue tang, Animation & Acting – A look at the art of creating a deep and profound connection between audience and fish, The Octopus That Nearly Broke Pixar – unraveling the challenges and rewards of bringing to life Pixar’s crankiest, most technically challenging character ever, Deep in the Kept – see how far the crew went to make Dory’s world believable, Deleted Scenes and so much more.

I couldn’t be happier that my own granddaughter loves baby Dory. Seeing the brightness in her eyes as the little blue tang searches for her parents is one of delight, fun and enjoyment. Isn’t that what we have come to expect from both Pixar and Disney? Once again they have not let us down but instead brings FINDING DORY home so we can all watch again and again.

In the end – it’s an unforgettable journey that she probably won’t remember but that’s okay, she has family!

Catch Up on DVD This Week with Televisions Favorite MODERN FAMILY: The Complete Seventh Season

Jeri Jacquin

It is a perfect opportunity this week to catch up on a family that has made its way into our hearts as 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, creators Steven Levitan and Christopher Lloyd show us a MODERN FAMILY: The Complete Seventh Season.

Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) are stretching their honeymoon to its limits while the Dunphy’s are hating that summer is almost over. Alex (Ariel Winter) is finally home from his trip and trouble isn’t far behind.

Jay (Ed O’Neill) and Gloria (Sofia Vergara), along with Cam, are having issues with the football team Manny (Rico Rodriguez) is playing for but what’s more intriguing is that Manny decides to date a popular older girl. New neighbors are giving Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) the wrong kind of goose bumps but it doesn’t stop Phil from creating a Halloween of his own.

mod-1

Of course the family is going to all react as well with Shrek costumes and crazy holiday activities but Mitchell will be spending his time in closing arguments. When Haley (Sarah Hyland) and Andy start spending more time together, Phil begins to question it.

Gloria is busy trying to sway Manny to learn Spanish and hires the very handsome Diego to teach. But that will have to wait as Thanksgiving approaches and Phil once again takes over with Luke (Nolan Gould) assisting. Claire knows this can not be a good thing and makes sure no one’s Thanksgiving will be birdless! Mitch and Cameron are dealing with Lily’s (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) absolute no-go on dressing up for dinner.

Haley is finally turning 21 and she isn’t about to let that go without hitting a bar and Claire learns a motherly lesson. Lily sets the adult’s right when she asks Alex, Luke and Manny (her trio of sitters) where babies come from.

Claire was right about her neighbors when she discovers they have put a boat in their front yard. Phil isn’t about to let this go and calls his father to the rescue and Dad brings a few very special friends. That’s not all Claire has to deal with after a big fight with Haley, she is stuck at an airport and the family puts their business online.

mod-3

Jay’s birthday is high on the list of events and everyone goes into high gear with Phil and a grill but Gloria has to deal with Luke and Manny and the consequences of drinking. Cam’s bowling team needs another playing and Jay agrees to be a substitute, the problem is Cam didn’t exactly tell him about the league.

The finale puts the family on high alert as Phil is stuck in Seattle and Alex’s graduation is here! Andy has a big choice to make but Haley and Beth have their own issues. Cam and Mitchell are seriously dealing with a problem that could easily be settles with the truth!

O’Neill and Vergara are the craziest couple ever and I’m sure it could be said that Vergara is the reason for this. Some of the things that come out of her mouth are gems and O’Neill’s reactions are priceless. Come on – watching them find a preschool for Joe killed me!

Burrell and Bowen are hilarious as a couple who want to do what’s best for their kids. Bowen is finally getting a little time with daughter Haley and Dad does his best to do his part. Stonestreet and Ferguson continue to be the cutest couple ever. Dealing with the finances means one of them is going to have to bring out the big guns to get their life back on track.

This 3 DVD disc set contains all 22 episodes including: Summer Lovin, The Day Alex Left for College, The Closet Case, She Crazy, The Verdict, The More You Ignore Me, Phil’s Sexy Sexy House, Clean Out Your Junk Drawer, White Christmas, Playdates, Spread Your Wings, Clean for a Day, Thunk in the Trunk, The Storm, I Don’t Know How She Does It, The Cover-Up, Express Yourself, The Party, Man Shouldn’t Lie, Promposal, Crazy Train and Double Click.

Also the Special Features of: Growing Up Modern Family, Storming the Seat – The Making of an Episode, Gag Reel, Deleted and Alternate Scenes, Extended Version of Think in the Trunk and Kids in the Spotlight are on this entertaining DVD collection.

MODERN FAMILY: The Complete Seventh Season is as close to my own family as television can get. Specifically we are a little twisted, have no problem telling it like it is, often fall over ourselves with good intentions, have kids who think we are nuts, have jobs that are testy which is why I believe the show is successful.

mod-4

The ensemble cast is responsible for bringing laughs and even a few awwwww’s – oh and over three hundred award nominations and over one hundred wins! Best Comedy Series a couple of times over gave them all well deserved Emmy’s.

It’s a fantastic time to catch up with the family as MODERN FAMILY begins its eighth season every Wednesday on ABC. Join the family!

In the end – they are one big straight, gay, multi-cultural and tradition happy family!
