ROWAN & MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN: The Complete 5th and 6th Season on DVD

season five laugh in

Jeri Jacquin

On DVD from Time Life, the company that continues to bring us comedy is ROWAN & MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN: The Complete 5th and 6th Season.

The gang is back for it’s fifth season on DVD with 24 episodes of the hit comedy series from 1971-1972. This is an epic year as finally Dick Martin gets a long awaited wish when Raquel Welch makes her lovely one and only debut on the show. Such a gorgeous woman and it is so much fun to watch Dick finally have his day!

6a

Of course if you are going to watch Laugh-In them you better be surprised for some amazing guest stars. Not from any one genre, era or walk of life, Laugh-In reaches around it all to bring such guests from television like Steve Allen and Johnny Carson. Also comedy from the likes of Carol Channing and Henny Youngman along with entertainers of song with Bing Crosby, Petula Clark, Liza Minnelli, Doc Severinsen and the legendary Johnny Cash.

Hollywood got in the act with Tony Curtis, Gene Hackman, Rita Hayworth, Vincent Price, Debbie Reynolds and John Wayne made an appearance.

Let’s not forget the Laugh-In regulars that include Lily Tomlin, Ruth Buzzi, Gary Owens, Alan Sues, Ann Elder, Dennis Allen, Barbara Sharma, Johnny Brown, Larry Hovis, Richard Dawson, Judy Carne, Arte Johnson, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley and Teresa Graves. All brought in to celebrate the 100th episode because what’s a party without a little name dropping!

laugh 5a

This season also includes the classic characters and situations we come to expect from Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. The famous Cocktail Party and the announcement of who would receive the Fickle Finger of Fate is fun filled only to end the show with a trip to the Joke Wall.

The characters of Edith Ann (who is only five years old mind you – and that’s the trutttthhhhhh!) as well as the loving couple of Gladys and Tyrone and Ruth Buzzi’s Hollywood Reporter give us the scoop on childhood, being a couple and the buzz around Buzzi’s Hollywood.

Let’s not forget what Laugh-In also brought to television viewers of the show, it brought comedy sure, but also digs at sports and politics and the joke was on them. This 6-disc 24 episode Fifth Season makes sure we are in on all of it.

ROWAN & MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN: The Complete Sixth Season continues with the comedy and the stars bringing a final season to the show changing series. Now understand, this series wasn’t to go down without making sure every zing was thrown and every chance of shade uttered.

season 6

Continuing with the previous years line up, the addition of Moosie Drier, Tod Bass, Brian Bressler, Patti Deutsch, Sara Kennedy, Jod Strunk, Willie Tyler & Lester, and Donna Jean Young join Dan, Dick, Lily Tomlin, Ruth Buzzi, Arte Johnson, Richard Dawson and Gary Owens to revel in a party from Downtown Burbank!

The final season’s celebrity line up is straight out of the sky as stars line up to have their moment with Jack Benny, James Caan, William Conrad, Sammy Davis, Jr., Dom DeLuise, Angie Dickinson, Sandy Duncan, James Farentino, Robert Goulet, Jack Klugman, Rich Little, Don Rickles, Mark Spitz, John Wayne, the beloved Michael Landon and the red head who needs no introduction but we’ll do it anyway – Carol Burnett.

The show takes aim at guns, laws, adult books, morality, the circus, Thanksgiving, beautiful people, sports, commercials, the family, airlines, actors, the Summer of ’72 and the golden state of California. Surprised? Of course not – everyone is fair game for this band of adorable and beloved misfits!

season 6a

As sad as the final season may have been at the time (and no longer sad now because all six seasons are offered by Time Life), the characters that I came to absolutely adore and excited to see every week at least came to play for one last season. Including Fickle Finger of Fate, Here Comes the Judge, the Joke Wall, General Bull Right, Big Al, Ernestine and Edith Ann along with The Swizzles and Robot Theater. That’s what makes this collection so epic, I can go back and enjoy myself time and time again with the comedy I grew up on!

Time Life continues to bring never before released anywhere classic collections of television shows for fans to revisit and remember what has made television so special. Time Life has released Mama’s Family, CPO Sharkey and The Tonight Show and they now reminds of us of a time when sex and politics were up for grabs with ROWAN & MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN. For more of what Time Life has to offer fans of classic television visit www.timelife.com.

laugh 5

The amazing thing about both of these seasons is that no matter how much you watch, there is always something new to laugh about. Even more amazing are the issues Laugh-In raised in regards to women, people of color and politics that are no so far away from the same issue we deal with today. Giving their pokes and prods, this series got away with a lot more than is possible today.

Time Life has made it possible for us all to relive not only a time in our lives when humor was television king, but share with our growing families what made us all laugh in the 70’s. They may even learn that the series Laugh-In brought sayings that are still used today and for the same reasons.

That is what this series did for television, for comedy and for bringing awareness to things that are funny but also important in our lives. There’s nothing wrong with that in the slightest and Laugh-In gave me a funny bone that I’m proud to carry every day.

In the end – are you ready to celebrate laughter?

The 50th Anniversary Special of THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW Comes to DVD

carol burnett dvd

Jeri Jacquin

Time Life knows how to throw a birthday party as the gang is brought to DVD for a Special One Night Event to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW.

On December 3, 2017, audiences to the number of 15.4 million took to their television screens on a Sunday evening to in a grand celebration. The Carol Burnett Show had taken to the airwaves to share a one-night event at CBS Television City in Los Angeles and the original soundstage where the show aired from.

This time, everybody is in on the fun as Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner and even costume designer Bob Mackie came to share the stories about their time on The Carol Burnett Show. The gathering also included special guests Jon Batiste, Beth Behrs, Jim Carrey, Kristin Chenoweth, Stephen Colbert, Harry Connick Jr., Kaley Cuoco, Bill Hader, Steve Lawrence, Jay Leno, Jane Lynch, Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Amy Poehler, Tracee Ellis Ross, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short and so many more.

carol 1

There was plenty of reason to celebrate as Carol and her guests talked on some of the most hilarious clips that included Went With The Wind, The Dentist, Tudball & Wiggins and, of course, The Family. Carol also brings us once again her famous Q&A with the audience that include live questions from Pat Boone and Tom Selleck.

Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph and Tracee Ellis Ross, along with Steve Carell, give Carol’s famous Tarzan yell a try and it is absolutely hilarious. What I absolutely loved, especially being a total fan of Jim Carrey is when he re-enacts a reply that he received after sending her a fan letter. Of course Carrey does it in his own unique way and that is of his 10-year-old self.

There is a musical number with Stephen Colbert, Steve Lawrence, Bernadette Peters, and Kristin Chenoweth along with Carol Burnett that just made my heart explode with joy. For someone like me who was raised on Carol Burnett, seeing this group of so many share a song with Carol was very reminiscent for me.

The closing of the special was stunning and just perfection as Harry Connick, Jr. joins Carol in singing her ear tugging show ending song “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together”.

Time Life continues to bring never before released anywhere classic collections of television shows for fans to revisit and remember what has made television so special. The DVD Special includes The Full 50th Anniversary Special as Broadcasted, Exclusive New Bonus Features Including Red-Carpet Footage, Back-Stage Interviews, and Anniversary Wishes from Carol’s Friends and Fans and A Tribute Booklet with Production Photos, Notes from Carol’s Guests, and a Special Message from Carol Herself!

carol 3

Carol Burnett left her iconic mark on television and there is no one that can dispute that. Her comedy was graceful and she, as well as her crew, made it all look so easy. Once a week I knew that I could look forward to their special brand of comedy, music and all those amazing guests stars.

But it was Carol herself who I was excited to see because she seemed too reachable and authentic to the millions of people who watched her then. I believe that that was the reason millions of people tuned into her one-night-special when it aired last year. For one hour we could forget any problems and dive into the characters Carol, Vickie, Harvey and Tim created week after week to delight us all.

carol 4

THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW 50th Anniversary Special is a pure celebration of everything we loved and continue to love about the show. It is a chance to hear how so many people and stars were and continue to be influenced by everything the show brought.

Time Life knows how much we love Carol Burnett and by putting the 50th celebration on DVD, it becomes an amazing addition to any home entertainment library that we can share again and again.

In the end – we continue to be glad to spend this time together!

TIME LIFE Has Stolen My Heart Because of Robin Williams!

robin 1

Jeri Jacquin

From Time Life, the re-creator for generations who thought their favorite shows and music were gone, is the ultimate heart stealer for me with the DVD Collection ROBIN WILLIAMS: Comic Genius.

Born in Chicago (which should have early on given me some clue for my admiration – Go Cubs!), he would be transplanted in his teens to Marine County, California. Choosing acting over anything else, he received a full scholarship to Juilliard in New York City.

Williams’s career began on the West Coast. Starting in San Francisco to Los Angeles, he hit the club circuit. Taking on twists and turns, in 1977 HBO would came calling to air one of his stand-up performances.

robin 3

But, it is in 1978 that a character known as Mork would invade an episode of the Garry Marshall television hit Happy Days. From that performance, the series Mork & Mindy starring Robin Williams and Pam Dawber was born. Set in Boulder, Colorado, Mork from Ork lands on our planet in an egg and what follows is a hatching of pure genius. Williams had the chance to be what ever he wanted to be and his face graced the cover of Time Magazine followed by Rolling Stones magazine.

HBO once again came calling which led to five comedy specials starting with 1978’s Off the Wall, in 1983 An Evening with Robin Williams and finally in 1986 Robin Williams: Live at the Met, Live on Broadway in 2002 and finally Weapons of Self Destruction in 2009. All five of these specials are still played in my home because nothing changes a mood quicker than when HBO allowed Williams to just be – well – Robin Williams.

His call to the screen was the next step and in 1982 he absolutely stunned me in the film THE WORLD ACCORDING TO GARP but it was in 1987 when GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM hit the screen that once again Williams sky rocketed. Using his wit and ability to create the voices of memorable characters, he cemented his career as a comedian.

robin 2

But there was one character he excelled at with heart and soul and that is dramatic roles. Starting in 1997 with GOOD WILL HUNTING and 1990’s AWAKENINGS, it was the tragic and soul crushing role in the 1998 film WHAT DREAMS MAY COME that tore me apart.

Off the big screen and small, Williams teamed up with friends Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal and brought Comic Relief USA to HBO raising $80 million dollars to help anyone in need. He also worked with the USO to bring laughs to over 100,000 troops and they, to this day, have not forgotten that.

Time Life is making sure that we don’t and in such a stunning and beautiful way! ROBIN WILLIAMS: Comic Genius is a 22-disc collection that brings us all through the years and reasons Williams is a beloved and iconic genius.

In the box set are all five HBO stand up specials, Never-before-seen released concert specials, including Robin’s full MGM Grand Garden stand-up from 2007 and the Montreal stop on his last tour, a conversation on stage between Williams and comedian David Steinberg, Memorable talk show and late night TV appearances on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, The Tonight Show starring Jay Leno, The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Graham Norton Show, Saturday Night Live and more.

robin 5

There are rare, never-before-seen clips including early stand-up, raw footage from HBO’s promo shoots, a hilarious toast to Richard Pryor by Robin as Mrs. Doubtfire, Brand new interviews with close friends and family including Billy Crystal, Steve Martin, Jay Leno, Eric Idle, David Steinberg, Lewis Black and son Zack Williams.

There are eleven hilarious episodes of Mork & Mindy including the two-part pilot, James Lipton’s Emmy Award-nominated 90-minute interview with Robin on Inside the Actors Studio including deleted scenes which are the best! A comprehensive collection of Robin’s USO shows around the world, original and newly created bonus features including a behind-the-scenes footage, local highlights from tour stops, promos and more.

Featurettes including The Early Years, San Francisco: Where It All Started, Comic Genius and TV’s Best Guest. Critically acclaimed 2018 HBO documentary Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind from Emmy-winning director Marina Zenovich and Oscar-winning producer Alex Gibney.

Finally, Robin Williams: Uncensored which is a collectible 24-page, full-color memory book featuring rare, archival photos from award-winning photographer Arthur Grace, reminiscences from friends and colleagues, Robin’s personal tour notes and so very much more.

robin 6

Time Life continues to bring never before released anywhere classic collections of television shows for fans to revisit and remember what has made television so special. Time Life has released Mama’s Family, CPO Sharkey and The Tonight Show and they now reminds of us of a time when sex and politics were up for grabs with ROWAN & MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN. This collection brings every emotion possible and that isn’t an exaggeration. Calling this collection Comic Genius is perfection and well deserved by Robin Williams. On stage and screen he had the whole world laughing (and with Mork probably the whole universe!) His unique comedic timing was fueled by the laughter from the audience, the more outrageous the farther he would go.

Twenty-two discs and over fifty hours of Williams will light us all up once again and let us experience the laughs again and again. That is why we have home entertainment libraries, so we can, at any time, pull off the shelf a beloved comedian that continues to be a laughing light. This family happens to be a Williams fan from the very beginning and his comedy specials have never stopped bringing us laughs and even catching ourselves repeating his lines a time or two in our lives.

robin 4

That is what makes Williams iconic and beloved and those two words seem to be not enough. Passing in 2014, it did not bring his comedy to a stop but instead continues to allow us to remember who he was and all that he gave through stand-up, television, the big screen and all his personal endeavors to make the world a happier place.

Each DVD cover inside the very cool collector’s box shows us all Williams’ silly side as if to tease about what is inside and to join him in the ride. I, personally, would never turn down the request of a Comic Genius!

In the end – it’s all about the na-nu-na-nu!

THE BEST OF THE THREE STOOGES

three

Jeri Jacquin

From the vaults of Time Life comes one of the most amazing collections of comedy I will ever have the joy of watching again and again with THE BEST OF THE THREE STOOGES.

Let me first start off by saying that as a kid, the Three Stooges were one of my most important introductions to comedy. Better than any Saturday morning cartoon, Moe, Curly and Larry could have tears running down my face within a few short minutes.

How did they begin? In the 1920’s vaudeville was huge and a source of amazing entertainment as Ted Healy and Moe Howard hit the stage. Shemp Howard, Curly Howard and Larry Fine would later become part of the group as well in their own time.

stooges 4

Within a few short years, The Three Stooges would begin making short comedies and between 1934 and 1946, Columbia Pictures would let the comedy trio do over 90 short films. That is insanely incredible to make that many pieces in what I consider a short period of time.

There were many shifts in the group with illnesses and deaths, but that didn’t stop The Three Stooges from continuing well into the 1970’s. In all that time, fans did not stop wanting to experience the fantastic comedy timing that The Three Stooges had to offer.

No one seemed to mind the changes in the line up as long as the line up was funny and entertaining. It seems audiences were more forgiving during that time than they are today.

What Time Life has managed to do, and I’m so thrilled they did it, was bring 13 discs which equals 45 hours of feature films, vintage animated cartoons and a nine part documentary series that had me completely riveted. I love knowing how my favorite actors, actresses and comediennes began, and it is all here.

stooges 3

With iconic lines such as “well I outta…..”, “oh wise guy eh?” and “Nyuk! Nyuk!” which are still used today (and probably not known why by those young folk who use it), it is a staple in my family. The Three Stooges brought slap to slap stick with eye pokes, rotating shoulders, nose grabs, and bonks on the head and yes, they are still used today by us all.

The first disc includes the feature film The Three Stooges, The Three Stooges Cartoons Bon Bon Parade (1935), Merry Mutineers (1936) A Hollywood Detour (1942), Disc 2 contains Shemp Howard Comedy Shorts with 14 Classics from the ‘30s and ‘40s, Joe Besser Comedy Shorts with 10 Side Splitters From the ‘40s and 50s, Joe DeRita Comedy Shorts with 4 Smackers from the ‘40s. Disc 3 has Have Rocket Will Travel, The Outlaws is Coming and Rockin’ in the Rockies.

That isn’t all! Disc 4 contains Documentary: Hey Moe! Hey Dad! and 4 Episodes of A Trio Grows in Brooklyn, A Stooge is Born, Slap Happy and Eureka. Finally, Disc 5 finished up with Documentary: Hey Moe! Hey Dad! and Good Night & Good Nyuk!, Déjà vu All Over Again, Bum’s Rush, Curtain Call and A Son Also Rises.

For more of what Time Life has to offer fans of classic television visit www.timelife.com.

stooges 2

Here’s more amazing news – this is only Volume One of THE BEST OF THE THREE STOOGES and it would have to be. This group of whacky and talented men lives a comedic life that was both hilarious and tragic at the same time.

Have Rocket, Will Travel has the group blasting off to Venus for a ride into the world of talking unicorns, aliens and giant tarantula’s and yes, those things are made for the boys to make fun of. Rockin’ in the Rockies has The Three Stooges prospecting in Nevada. Of course that couldn’t possibly be all especially with the era full of cattle rustlers and roulette wheels at the local casino saloon.

There are so many amazing reasons to have The Three Stooges as part of your home entertainment library and these two examples of laughs are only one reason. The comedy trio (even through the changes) are iconic in the world and are still copied today in many ways.

This past Halloween alone I saw people dressed up as Moe, Curly and Larry and I couldn’t be happier about it. There is something sweet and nostalgic about a part of my childhood showing up from time to time to remind me of where my sense of humor came from.

stooges 5

Now, I have the opportunity to share with my family the hilarity and it is my three-year-old granddaughter who follows in my footsteps in a fantastic way. She can’t stop herself from laughing hysterically at the antics of The Three Stooges. Time Life has gone in-depth gathering the films, documentaries and animated cartoons for what will be known now as fans of all ages.

In the end – they are The Three Stooges of mayhem and fun!

These are the years that will never be again but thanks to Time Life we can once again experience some of those most touching moments and rock out to music that will never die!

rock 1

Barry Gibb and brother Robin take to the stage to induct Abba into the Hall of Fame with Benny Anderson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad accepting. Faith Hill takes the stage for her heart felt rendition of the classic Abba song The Winner Takes It All.

At the 26th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the list of attendees is even bigger. Beginning with John Legend’s induction speech for the incomparable Dr. John, it is amazing to experience someone else’s feelings towards the amazing performer. Bette Midler has a chance to take the stage with her speech for the induction of the well deserved Darlene Love. Her speech about the career she has experienced was informative and long time in coming.

Growing up in this next inductees era, there was one song that rocked for years, oh lets face it EVERY year around June when it was time to leave our books behind and enjoy the sun and beach. Rob Zombie inducts Alice Cooper which also gave me a thrill to see him perform the songs that kept me riveted for years with Eighteen, Under My Heels and, of course, the iconic anthem that is still played to School’s Out. The groups acceptance speech included Michael Bruce, Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith and an endearing ‘thanks to my wife’, the irreplaceable Alice Cooper.

Neil Young inducts Tom Waits into the Hall of Fame and Waits comes to the stage with his unique voice thanking all he could and giving us a bit more of his humor as well. I have to say that although I am thrilled to say that I couldn’t get enough of Tom Waits through the years, I do enjoy his film roles as well. He continues to be unique both in front of a music crowd but a theatre screen as well.

rock 3

Elton John comes to the podium and gives a riveting speech to induct Leon Russell into the Hall of Fame. Sharing his memories of when he met Russell, Elton also recalls the time he listened to Russell and broke down in sobs. Knowing it needed to happen, Elton embarked on a journey to make music with Russell. The speech about the inductee almost had me in tears as well.

That is when the concert of a lifetime begins as Tom Waits and Dr. John along with Paul Shaffer and the Hall of Fame Orchestra perform the songs Make It Rain, Rain Dogs, House Where Nobody Lives, and Right Place Wrong Time. It is followed by Leon Russell singing out Delta Lady, A Song For You with an amazing performance with John Legend. Darlene Love is joined by another legend onstage as Bruce Springsteen is introduced to join her in a musical set. Love and Bette Midler take on (Today I Met) The Boy I’m Gonna Marry and He’s A Rebel.

The 27th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held at the Public Hall in Cleveland, Ohio begins with a performance by Green Day singing Letterbomb and Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill inducting Freddie King into the hall of fame with a speech by Wanda King followed by a performance of the songs Hide Away and Going Down. Chuck D and LL Cool J inducts the Beastie Boys with an acceptance speech by Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz. The audience is treated to their songs No Sleep Till Brooklyn, So What ‘Cha Want and Sabotage.

Chris Rock gets his time to induct the Red Hot Chili Peppers and there to accept is Flea, Jack Irons, Anthony Kiedis, Josh Klinghoffer, Cliff Martinez, James Slovak (on behalf of Hillel Slovak) and Chad Smith. A performance of their songs By The Way, The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie and Give It Away had me hopping around the house a little (don’t tell anyone!).

The finale caps off the event with the Red Hot Chili Peppers with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Jam Band with Higher Ground.

The 28th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles begins with Randy Newman, the beloved Tom Petty, John Fogerty and Jackson Browne doing the song that makes people everywhere wish they were there in I Love LA. Don Henley gives us a look at Newman’s musical history and what he has accomplished. Newman and Henley take the stage to rock a little with I’m Dead (But I Don’t Know It).

John Mayer arrives onstage to induct Albert King to the Hall of Fame as Gary Clark Jr. performs Oh, Pretty Woman and is joined by Booker T. Jones and John Mayer for Born Under a Bad Sign. If you don’t know Albert Kings work, it is worth everything in your musical world to experience. The performance is stirring and filled with all the soul intended by Albert King the first time he played them. Born Under A Bad Sign performance is the reason we go to musical church time after time!

28th Annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - Show

Chris Cornell inducts the band called Heart. The speeches include Michael DeRosier, Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Howard Leese. It is Ann and Nancy Wilson who prove that sisters can rock it like there is no music in the world. Their range and talent can not be matched and I dare anyone to try because you can’t break sisters. As Ann Wilson said, they came at a time when there were only four career choices for women and being part of a rock band wasn’t one of them. Performing Crazy On You and Barracuda, they are joined by Jerry Cantrell, Chris Cornell and Mike McCready.

Oprah Winfrey inducts Quincy Jones into the Hall of Fame along with receiving the Ahmet Ertegun Award for Lifetime Achievement. Spike Lee and Harry Belefonte induct Public Enemy and the acceptance speeches include Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X and Professor Griff.

Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins induct the band Rush into the Hall of Fame as Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart take the stage. Along with Grohl and Hawkins, Rush gears up to play the final set with 2112: Overture, Tom Sawyer and The Spirit of Radio. Watching Rush play gives the feeling of being transported back to being at one of their concerts in the early days. This group has made its mark and is the epitome of the era of music.

Four years induction on two brilliantly mastered discs reminds us all why we love our rock and roll as well as other genres of music that has endured. It is over 481 minutes of extensive inductions and musical performances.

This collection has some of the most amazing collaboration of performances that has ever been seen and I personally am thrilled by them. It has been some time since I’ve seen many of these performers so having this Bluray makes sure that will never happen again. Memorable songs that have become iconic for so many reasons are only one of the added bonuses to this collection.

rock 2

Adding this four year Rock & Roll Hall of Fame two-disc set to your home entertainment library is like having a concert in your home anytime you like and embracing the music that we keep listening, dancing and occasionally dance around our house in. Music has an amazing ability to transport us back into emotions, both good and maybe not-so-good, memorable times and places that are welcoming.

Time Life once again takes us on a musical journey that is uplifting, soul searching, endearing, and empowering. That is what they do best with their CD’s that I love but now adding the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony’s so we can see the singers, bands and performers that have impacted our lives.

In the end – because..long live rock and roll!!!!

The Fun has Just Begun for Laughs as ROWAN AND MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN: The Complete Fourth Season Arrives on DVD

laughin cober

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD this May from Time Life is the next amazing season of comedic timing, fun and characters galore with ROWAN AND MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN: The Complete Fourth Season.

It is the fourth season of a show that America has come to embrace filled with characters that have made their mark in television history. Comedians Dan Rowan and Dick Martin would come to be the iconic dynamic-humor duo beginning in 1967 as LAUGH-IN hit the airwaves with what was suppose to be a one-time special. What actually happened was that a comedy series like no other would make its way onto television sets and become one of TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time!

Gary Owens would introduce the program with his infamous hand over the ear and slap stick voice letting us know it was basically time to prepare our funny bones for what was to come. Rowan and Martin would give both the ‘live’ studio audience and those of us at home a well choreographed humor dance that was perfection.

rowan 1

In this season Don Rickles brings his own brand of sarcastic and enjoys getting laughs as Arlene Francis or at least his version of the actress. Goldie Hawn makes her triumphant return to her cute and comedy roots after winning an Academy Award for CACTUS FLOWER.

As always I am thrilled when Lily Tomlin brings her two best characters to LAUGH-IN. Ernestine and Edith Ann are total opposite in character and both have an amazing look on life and no problem sharing it with us. Tomlin is still one of my all time favorite ladies and these two loveable and smart characters are exactly why.

Most people don’t know who Zero Mostel is and that would be a shame except that this season of LAUGH-IN on DVD invites everyone to see the most amazing four minutes of pantomime ever to be seen. This is the thrill that Time Life has brought back with this collection, a chance for everyone to see how comedy has progressed and who made that happen.

It is a chance to go back a little in time and enjoy the comedy that reigned supreme in its day and can wear the crown of fun once again.

Rowan 2

Each show ended with Rowan telling his counterpart ‘Say goodnight Dick’ and the reply was ever faithful with ‘Goodnight Dick!’ So if you can recall how much fun ROWAN and MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN was, I am willing to bet that the opportunity to experience it all once again on DVD, all 1,384 minutes, will bring a huge grin and we have Time Life to thank for that!

In the end – political correctness? Forget about it!

ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME: In Concert Delivers the Best Music from Iconic Musicians

Rock and roll cover

Jeri Jacquin

Time Life has put together another amazing and brilliant Bluray reminding me why I live for music with ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME: In Concert.

This collection begins with the 29th Annual Induction Ceremony in 2014 with one of my favorite musicians Peter Gabriel who has given audiences some beautiful music through different genres. Starting with a speech by Chris Martin from Coldplay with a very funny biblical speech, it is Gabriel who reminds us that music moves us in ways that are unexplainable. He encourages musicians to be different and doesn’t forget to thank those who have allowed him to live his musical life. His performance with Chris Martin is stirring, heartfelt and personally brought a smile to my face. His finish of ‘In Your Eyes’ gave me a moment to remember my wedding day when the song played as I readied to walk down the aisle to marry my own Lloyd Dobler. Perfection!

rock 3

Simon Garfunkle shows up to tell the story of Cat Stevens and how he has affected lives welcoming the seeker into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Stevens comes to the stage and is forthcoming about his music and his life to the point of reminding us all what his music truly brought to the world. His rendition of ‘Father and Sons’ is just as moving today as it was the very first time I heard it. ‘Baby It’s a Wild World’ and ‘Peace Train’ is so emotional and the audience is completely mesmorized by this once in a lifetime performance.

Glenn Fry inducts Linda Rondstadt into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Carrie Underwood, Bonnie Raitt and Emmy Lou Harris giving a performance of ‘Blue Bayou’. Cheryl Crow is added to the musical mix for the beloved song ‘You’re No Good’ with the final addition of Stevie Nicks to add her vocals to ‘It’s So Easy’ and ‘When Will I Be Loved?’

There are so many more on the first disc alone! Bruce Springsteen and his E Street gang as well as Michael Stipes inducting Nirvana to the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. Joan Jett comes to the stage with Dave Grohl to rock and smash on the song ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth to grunge ‘Aneurysm’ and Lorde finishes with ‘All Apologies’. I have to say I was thrilled to see Dave Grohl back on the drums for Nirvana.

The 30th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame happened on April 18th, 2015 and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts are now taking the stage themselves to bring us ‘Bad Reputation’, one of my favorite songs ‘Crimson and Clover’ as Joan is joined by Miley Cyrus, Gary Ryan, Dave Grohl and the one and only Tommy James. The Paul Butterfield Blues Band brought out Zac Brown, Tom Morello, Jason Ricci and Paul Shaffer for ‘Born in Chicago’.

rock 5

Stevie Wonder inducts Bill Withers as the two also share the stage for ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ and ‘Lean on Me’ along with John Legend. Green Day is inducted by Fall Out Boy as fans once again get to hear such songs as ‘American Idiot’, ‘When I Come Around’ and a song many of us could relate to with ‘Basket Case’.

Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble are inducted by John Mayer and I couldn’t wait to hear the song ‘Texas Flood’ once again! Patti Smith inducts Lou Reed as Laurie Anderson accepts on his behalf. Beck leads the song ‘Satellite of Love’ which is a song that has endured.

Receiving the Award for Musical Excellence is Ringo Starr and who better to give him the award than his brother in music Sir Paul McCartney. Green Day joins Ringo Starr for ‘Boys’ and Joe Walsh joins him for ‘It Don’t Come Easy’. Of course the finale wouldn’t be  a finale without Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney joined by Joe Walsh for ‘I Wanna Be Your Man’.

The 31st Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony held on April 6, 2016 brings Lars Ulrich to tell the story of how the group Deep Purple into his life and they have an impact bringing the audience ‘Highway Star’ and ‘Smoke on the Water’ (Ulrich causes the beginning rift of that song the first thing guitar players learn and the rift that has been banned from music stores). Ulrich isn’t lying because it is the first thing I learned on my guitar because I too wanted to be cool even if for a moment.

rock 2

Bert Berns is inducted by Steven Van Zandt with the Ahmet Ertegun Award for Lifetime Achievement with a very touching acceptance speech by Cassandra and Brett Berns. Kendrick Lamar inducts N.W.A. as Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, DJ Yella and MC Ren take the stage with their own acceptance speeches.

Rob Thomas inducts the group Chicago as the group takes the stage for ‘Saturday in the Park’, ‘Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?’, and ’25 or 6 to 4′. These are amazing songs that had me toe tapping and Rob Thomas said it best, ‘these songs are the sound of a city, they are the sound of a melting pot, they are the sounds of unity and they are the sounds of Chicago’ and I couldn’t agree more. These are songs of my teen years and every time I hear them I remember the sites and sounds of my life. Nothing wrong with that!

Kid Rock is the perfect person to induct Cheap Trick into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with a speech that might have some parents either cheering him on (the younger version of ourselves at least) or jaw drop but mentally doing the right on hand gesture. He says, “You can’t not watch them. Their front man is a matinee idol that can croon with swagger and their guitarist looks like a Bowery Boy on acid. No studio could do them justice, they were so big, so loud and so fast that no one could capture their fury.” Cheap Trick rocks on the stage with ‘I Want You To Want Me’, ‘Dream Police’, ‘Surrender’ and the finale ‘Ain’t That A Shame’.

Finally, The 32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony starts with the induction of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra for those hatched from an egg yesterday) as Jeff Lynne brings to the stage ‘Roll Over Beethoven’, ‘Evil Woman’ and ‘Mr. Blue Sky’. They are inducted by Dhani Harrison (who looks beautifully like his father) which is an awesome way to start the ceremony!

rock 1

Jackson Browne has the honor of inducting Joan Baez as she brings her recognizeable voice to ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’, then joined by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers for ‘Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos) and finally ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’. Baez’ voice still carries the glory of faith, hope and the hope for a better tomorrow.

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson from the group Rush induct the band Yes as Geddy Lee joins in with ‘Roundabout’ and Yes performs one of my favorite songs ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’. Lifeson says that his first experience with Yes was as a teenager letting the music wash over him and that this was his gateway band at the age of 17. It is as if he is speaking for all of us who first came across the band in our teen years.

Snoop Dogg inducts Tupac Shakur into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to the cheer of the crowd. It has been 21 years since the death of Shakur and Snoop Dogg tells the brief story of his life. He says, “To be human is to be many things at once, strong and vulnerable, hard headed and intellectual, revolutionary and gangster so while we are here to celebrate a prolific artist – I am here to make sure Pac is remembered the way he wanted to be – a strong black man”.

Setting my brain on fire is Pat Monahan from Train who inducts my beloved band Journey into the Hall of Fame. I could hardly contain myself to see the band Jonathan Cain, Aynsley Dunbar, Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, Steve Smith and Ross Valory on stage.

32nd Annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - Show

Feeling as if I was once again in a concert hall (as I did so many times when they were on tour), I had the chance to once again hear ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), ‘Lights’ and ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ and my heart just swelled up knowing that these guys were  on my record player so many times I warped the album (yes kids, albums, round discs that when you put a needle on it played glorious sounds with the occasional popping sound that I love to this very day).

Monahan said it best, “There music has transcended all things that separate us as humans”. My Journey collection remains in my safe keeping and anytime I need to go to an deep music place, the needle hits the vinyl and I hear the one and only voice of Steve Perry.

Finally, David Letterman inducts Pearl Jam into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The music of Pearl Jam includes ‘Alive’, ‘Given to Fly’ and ‘Better Man’. Letterman calls them cultural icons as well as friends and lists songs that bring the fans to screams. Telling their story along with the list, there doesn’t seem to be a song that doesn’t cause a reaction. Having the chance to experience Pearl Jam playing together again is just a ridiculous joy! Eddie Vedder still has the voice that stands out with its storytelling righteous anger as his band makes irock 5t all sound easy.

This not enough for you? Then awesome news because Time Life will also be releasing the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME IN CONCERT Digital Album Collection. Comprised of five digital releases respectively spanning the ceremonies from 2010-11, 2012-13, 2014, 2015 and 2016-17 contain the same groundbreaking live performances from the home entertainment sets. There are also bonus performances by Rush, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Alice Cooper, Donovan, Dr. John, Heart, The Hollies, Darlene Love, Leon Russell, Small Faces/Faces, The Stooges, Tom Waits and others. The digital release will be available on iTunes, Amazon and all other leading digital retailers.

The institution carries out its mission by giving voice to the stories of the people, artifacts and events that shaped rock and roll. For more information on the Museum please visit http://www.rockhall.com.

These four ceremonies to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame are absolutely beyond description. I’ve tried my best here but let me tell you that revisiting each of these ceremonies just reiterates David Letterman’s sentiments of ‘what a gift live music truly is and never take it for granted’. These are words to live by!

This is an opportunity for those who have missed the performances to see how beautiful each ceremony is captured on Bluray and gives us every bit of the action. From heart felt speeches to spot on performances, there is nothing but beauty, music and emotion from some of the best that music has to offer. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame never disappoints with its inductees and the performances bringing the audience to their feet and had me toe tapping and head rockin.

In the end – Long Live Rock!

ROWAN and MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN: The Complete Third Season Arrives on DVD

B4337.CIM

Jeri Jacquin

It’s that time again as Time Life continues to keep the laughs coming with another amazing DVD set of ROWAN and MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN: The Complete Third Season.

Comedians Dan Rowan and Dick Martin would come to be the iconic dynamic-humor duo beginning in 1967 as LAUGH-IN hit the airwaves with what was suppose to be a one-time special. What actually happened was that a comedy series like no other would make its way onto television sets and become one of TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time!

laugh 1

Gary Owens would introduce the program with his infamous hand over the ear and slap stick voice letting us know it was basically time to prepare our funny bones for what was to come. Rowan and Martin would give both the ‘live’ studio audience and those of us at home a well choreographed humor dance that was perfection.

A cast of regulars and weekly special guests always brought their own unique brand of funny. As the first season included cast members Ruth Buzzi, Arte ‘very interesting…but stupid’ Johnson, Goldie Hawn, Pamela Rodgers, Teresa Graves, the laughable Jo Anne Worley and lovely Judy Carne – the third season brought a woman who would shape my comedy mind so thank you Lily Tomlin.

Arte Johnson brought his Rabbi Shankar and Tyrone F. Horneigh to the screen with the latter chasing Ruth Buzzi’s Gladys Ormphby as far as his old legs would carry him. Gladys was a elderly drab woman in a hairnet looking for love but not in the army of Horneigh! Although in this season we come very close to what I thought they would have been the cutest wedding ever on television. The opposite of Gladys would be Doris Swizzle sitting on a barstool next to hubby Leonard!

laugh 2

Tomlin brought to the show a plethora of characters that still have my heart today with Ernestine ‘one ringy dingy’ the telephone operator who had no problem keeping it real, grocery clerk Dotty who rang up laughs along with her ability to cut to the quick and finally, my beloved Edith Ann ‘and I’m only five years old’ who rocked her way into hearts with her outlook on life and a nice big raspberry like an exclamation point at the end of a sentence.

In this 26 episode-7 DVD Complete Third Season there are so many famous guest stars as well as the cast regulars. Appearances on the show included Johnny Carson, Debbie Reynolds, Peter Sellers, Flip Wilson, Michael Caine, Bob Hope, Diana Ross, Sonny & Cher, The Monkees (hold me back!), Carol Channing, Buddy Hackett, Sid Ceasar, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jack Benny, Engelbert Humperdinck, Peter Lawford, Phyllis Diller, Roger Moore, Romy Schneider, Greer Garson, Lorne Greene of BONANZA fame, Ed McMahon, Frank Sinatra Jr. and his sister Nancy Sinatra, James Garner, Bing Crosby, Jim Backus, Andy Williams, Carl Reiner, Ringo Starr, Andy Griffith and the ever handsome Tony Curtis.

An amazing Bonus Feature is an interview with Lily Tomlin and featurette of Still Laugh-In – A Tribute to George Schlatter who was the shows creator and executive producer.

laugh 3

This is a series that is so much fun to explain to someone who may not have seen it before. They are surprised to learn that many of the saying they had come to know had their origins in this very series. I also love that my generation still gets excited having the opportunity to re-watch a series that most thought was gone forever.

Reliving Sock It To Me, the Cocktail Party, Sammy David Jr. teaching us how to strut to ‘here comes the judge!’, and The Flying Fickle Finger of Fate Award given to someone who truly deserved to be called out. This would be the season that we were introduced to the Farkle Family with Dad Frank Farkle, his wife Fanny Farkle and two children Simon and Gar Farkle. The family had a very interesting way of speaking and along with neighbor Ferd Berfel (which by the way was my first hamsters’ name), it was a group that I could have easily spent time with.

That is what ROWAN and MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN did for my generation actually. It gave us a brand of humor that would light up our minds as it took the comedy road to point out the government, what women were going through at the time as well as that of Native Americans. There was nothing and no one off limits to the sketches and final poke as the show closed with a wall of doors as the cast had a chance to make jokes and take one last jab of fun.

laugh 4

Each show ended with Rowan telling his counterpart ‘Say goodnight Dick’ and the reply was ever faithful with ‘Goodnight Dick!’. So if you can recall how much fun ROWAN and MARTIN’S LAUGH-IN was, I am willing to bet that the opportunity to experience it all once again on DVD, all 1425 minutes, will bring a huge grin and we have Time Life to thank for that!

In the end – political correctness? Forget about it!

THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW In Color Brings Back an Icon of Comedy on DVD from Time Life

Jackie DVD

Jeri Jacquin

Time Life is bringing some of the best in comedy for the next generation as THE JACKIE GLEASON SHOW In Color comes in February.

John Herbert Gleason who came to be known as Jackie brought his unusual comedy styling’s through the character of Ralph Kramden the bus driver in the television series The Honeymooners. His life didn’t start out quite as funny being raised by a single mother after his father walked out with hat in hand and didn’t come back.

When his mother Mae passed away when Jackie was 19, he was taken in by a friend who introduced him to his first comedy job. A few years later he would be signed by Jack Warner and appeared in such films as the 1941 NAVY BLUES and in a film with Humphrey Bogart in 1941 with ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT.

Jack 3

Television came to call in 1949 and after several shows, he would host The Jackie Gleason Show in 1954-55 that brought audiences iconic characters such as Joe the Bartender, The Poor Soul, Charlie Bratton and Fenwick Babbit with so many more.

In 1966, Jackie Gleeson returns with a new season and color episodes of The Honeymooners. His guests would include Milton Berle, Red Buttons, George Carlin, Nipsey Russell, Phil Silvers in color.

This DVD gives viewers a look at four never-before-seen released episodes that have been beautifully remastered. There are also three Honeymooners sketches that haven’t been seen since originally aired.

The show was recorded in Miami Beach and happily had bragging rights as the place of sun and fun. Taped there until the final 1970 season, the master tapes stayed in the vault until now.

jack 1

Staring off with Jackie spending a little time with Red Buttons is comedy and timing that is nothing short of delightful. Seeing the very handsome and young Frankie Avalon singing once again is such a treat for me as he was one of my mother’s favorite singers.

Not to be outdone, Jackie spends time with Phil Silvers are they dance and annoy one another over the word ‘aluminum’. On stage with a cigarette in one hand and an comedic insult in the other, Jackie lets everything fly. Instead, Phil gives us a bit of his own version of a mix of romantic song with an operatic flare.

The most amazing part of the DVD is the revisit of The Honeymooners as Jackie returns as Ralph Kramden, Art Carney as Ed Norton, along with Sheila MacRae as Alice Kramden and Jane Kean as Trixie Norton. When a dog’s doctor report comes into Ralphs hands, comedy is inevitable.

Sammy Spear as Jackie’s orchestra leader, he musically announces guests such as song-bird Florence Henderson and the very funny Morey Amsterdam who also provides a little cello entertainment. There is also more from those amazing Honeymooners.

Nipsey Russell brings song, dance and clever poetry with his comedy and Jackie knows a talent when he sees it. The comedy of Jan Murray decides to teach Jackie how to golf just a little better.

Jack 2

Milton Berle stops by to exchange humor with Jackie and the show also includes Edie Adams singing about the famous cabaret and sharing some famous impressions. A suit wearing young man you may know as funny man George Carlin has short hair and no bear but still hilarious.

That’s what makes this collection so amazing; revisiting the weekly entertainment that kept families laughing can now be experiences once again. The comedy is superb and even racy at times (especially for the time period), the music is very nostalgic yet the ladies are lovely and the fun was clearly had by all.

Jackie Gleason came to be known as The Great One and for good reason. He gave us all laughs and from stage, television and the big screen, Gleason made an impact in every genre he undertook. Even in his later years nothing stopped him from making us all laugh from his character in SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT to his final film role in that is beautiful with NOTHING IN COMMON along side Tom Hanks.

In the end – he reminds us all of ‘how sweet it is!’
