EMPIRE: The Complete Second Season Wants us in the Lyon’s Den Again!

Jeri Jacquin

Now on DVD from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is the smash series that could only be considered an EMPIRE: The Complete Second Season.

At the end of the first season, Lucious Lyon (Terrence Howard) is going off to jail and as the second season starts Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) is putting together a #FreeLucious concert. That is on the outside but what is happening inside is a takeover of Empire by Andre (Trai Byers), Hakeem (Bryshere Y. Gray) and Anika (Grace Gealey) work with Mimi Whiteman (Marisa Tomei).

As usual on Empire, there is a twist when Jamal drops a bomb on them all leaving Cookie no other choice than to gather up her troops and start Lyon Dynasty. Hakeem gets steamy over his singer Valentina (Becky G) and doesn’t go through Empire to release his new album.

Lucious has his own problems with prison guards and trying to record in prison. The good news is he finally gets a bail hearing and prosecuting attorney Roxanne (Tyra Ferrell) is less than thrilled. Lucious is out on bail but can’t go near Empire and his family doesn’t want him around either. So what’s a man to do?

Anger his family further of course! Lucious buys Apex Radio and signs Hakeem’s love to a deal with Empire. But Roxanne isn’t anywhere near done with Lucious having the FBI raid Empire and Lyon Dynasty. She also goes after Cookie!

When Vernon is found dead, Lucious is freed and heads right back to Empire. His lawyer wants the master tapes from Cookie but she isn’t about to let them out of her sight. That’s when Hakeem is kidnapped for ransom and crazy cookie thinks she needs the kidnappers as security but it’s more like she needs one of them, Laz (Adam Rodriguez), in her bed!

After family complications turn into a battle, Freda (Bre-Z) and Hakeem go head to head with Empire vs. Dynasty. If family matters aren’t complicated enough, Candace (Vivica A. Fox) turns up because she can’t find their sister Carol (Tasha Smith). Of course the only way is to hit the streets of Philadelphia.

Lucious is using his new freedom fast and furious trying to get into the streaming business, getting Hakeem to return to empire and get Cookie to sign over song rights. When none of this pans out, things begin to heat up when Mimi tries a little takeover of her own and Hakeem finally gets a little daddy-payback.

Cookie goes after Hakeem but all is put on hold when Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) has an accident and the family rushes to the hospital to be with her and Andre. The emotions bring the family together to go after Mimi and Camilla (Naomi Campbell) with a vengeance. Rhonda spies on Camilla, Hakeem gets the information they need on tape but the number one rule around the Lyons Den should be ‘never drink what is given’!

The season finale is where the burning questions of Lucious’ past come out, what really happened to Rhonda on the stairs, the feds are back in the picture again because of Tommy and Rosy, Hakeem and Laura are working toward their wedding day, Anika has lost her ever lovin’ mind on a ledge, devastation is on the horizon, weddings are never what you think and Lucious’ Mom decides now is a good a time as any to drop a family bombshell with more people on a ledge (and I think I was one of them!)

So another story finale that will have EMPIRE fans waiting to discover who was it screaming?

Howard as Lucious Lyon makes his character look like a cake walk. From the moment he is on screen it is clear that this particular Lyon has claws that would make a jungle cat hide in shame. He is ruthless and at the same time totally and absolutely shameless in every move he makes. Not even prison scares this guy!

Henson as Cookie is the female version of Lucious which is probably why they can’t stand each other. No one likes looking in the mirror! The one thing that Cookie has that Lucious doesn’t is a fierceness to family, even when family is driving her absolutely to the brink of insanity. Henson has the right eyebrows to put the fear of the universe in anyone she is standing in front of.

Gray as Hakeem has scores to settle but mainly with his father, Smollett as Jamal always has me suspicious, Byers as Andre continues to deal with his own personal issues and when Doubleday as Rhonda has her emergency – these two come together.

Tomei as Mimi is just one smiley face back stabbing individual and Campbell as Camilla, Mimi’s other has a game of her own that is a little twisted and unbelievable. Rodriguez as Laz is a man playing a seriously dangerous game. I mean seriously, a kidnapper who sleeps with the mother of his victim? That’s something Lucious could appreciate if it wasn’t his son!

Relive it all with THE WALKING DEAD: The Complete Sixth Season on Bluray

dead bluray

Jeri Jacquin

If there ever was a reason to be crazy excited for THE WALKING DEAD it would be Season Six as AMC and Anchor Bay Entertainment release THE WALKING DEAD: The Complete Sixth Season.

The season opens in spectacular fashion as Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is up to his quarry in zombies! Trying to lure them away, Rick’s group and the other Alexandrians take a plan step by step to save the town. That might not matter in the slightest when a blaring horn changes their plans.

The “W” found on the foreheads of others is finally revealed as the Wolves hit Alexandria hard. While Rick and the others taking care of Walkers, it is up to the town to come together as Morgan (Lennie James), Carol (Melissa McBride), and Carl (Chandler Riggs) do what it is they have learned to do – protect their own. The one exception is Enid who decides to take off.

dead 4

As Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) try to change the course of the herd of zombies, they are caught and separated leaving Glenn and Nicholas trapped as the others get away. What happens next is still one of the most talked about episodes and if you haven’t seen it I’m not about to give it all away.

After the Wolves in Alexandria, Rick gets there in time to gather up those he can. Maggie (Lauren Cohan) keeps her composure when she learns Glenn is among those who hasn’t returned, especially since she has news for him.

Back on the road, Daryl (Norman Reedus), Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Abraham are still leading the pack away and they don’t expect to be attacked by a group they have never seen before. Taking what the three had collected, but not before meeting The Saviors who tell them everything now belongs to the mysterious Negan!

Glen finds the runaway Enid and convinces her to return to Alexandria. What Carol discovers about Morgan brings nothing short of a confrontation between the two. Caught in the middle is Denise (Merritt Wever) who has taken over the role of town doctor.

Once the Walkers find their way in to Alexandria, Rick and the group head to Jessie’s house but not before realizing Deanna is in trouble. Also in trouble is Carl who is injured in a harsh way. It is the fuel brought back by Daryl, Sasha and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz) that stop further invasion.

dead 3

Then the arrival of Jesus (Tom Payne) introduces the Alexandrians to the Hilltop where Negan is finally explained to them. The Saviors are Negans’ group who go around taking from everyone. Maggie has a meeting with the Hilltop’s leader Gregory (Xander Berkeley) and a deal is struck – in exchange for food and supplies, Maggie’s group must take out The Saviors.

A plan is formed with Rick and a group deciding how to handle this group of unknowns. Maggie and Carol are on the outside when Daryl hears that they have been taken by a group of fairly insane individuals. What the captors don’t know is that Maggie and Carol aren’t about to take their captivity without a fight.

Daryl, Rosita (Christian Serratos), Eugene (Josh McDermitt) and Denise are looking for medical supplies for the injured but Dwight (Austin Amelio) and The Saviors are waiting for them. The group that is left lock Alexandria down but not before Carol decides she has had enough and leaves. Rick and Morgan go after her while Daryl decides he isn’t going to take killing his people lying down.

What none of the suspect is that The Saviors are waiting all round them and in a finale that is still causing a stir with fans – Rick, Michonne, Carol, Eugene, Abraham, Rosita, Glen, Maggie and Daryl are on their knees before Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and one will feel the wrath of Lucille.

One swing of that bat changes everything!

Did I tell you everything? Absolutely not! That is the best part of this series; there is no way to tell anyone everything as the creepy fleshy stuff is in the details. Of course THE WALKING DEAD has zombies and some of the best undead I have ever seen on television, or in film for that matter.

dead 2

Lincoln as Rick can do no wrong and if you don’t believe me just as the thousands of howling fans when that man enters Hall H of Comic Con every year. He may have his ‘Rick-tator’ moments but we all love him! This season he is up against the craziest sorts trying to control as much of this uncontrollable world as possible.

Gurira as Michonne has finally come to terms with how this chaos is and still manages to give fans what they have suspected for a few seasons now. There is chemistry that finally brings love among the corpses. Yes, I’m going to talk in zombie terms as much as possible. Gurira gives this character such depth and yet still manages a smile occasionally and I’ve watched that smile change things up.

Riggs as Carl has certainly grown up right before our eye (pun intended) yet he still is showing signs of definitely being his father’s son. He is also big brother who isn’t about to let Wolves, Saviors or any other creepy thing get near his baby sister! Yeun as Glenn continues to get out of bloody situations while continuing to be a supporter of the group that keeps Maggie safe.

McBride as Carol is secretly my favorite because she is the only woman I know who can look like June Cleaver until it’s time to rip off the housewife-baking sweater and wield a weapon. Cohan as Maggie has taken on a leadership role that frees Rick up to be the muscle. Now with her own secret know that it won’t be a secret for long! Cudlitz as Abraham shows me once again what I’ve already known – redheads are badasses! McDermott as Eugene has me wondering this season whether his character is going to do something significant or end up a zombie happy meal. Serratos as Rosita is also showing her chops and Wever as Denise learns what chops can do. James as Morgan is a character I can’t talk about without wanting to throw something at him whereas once I trusted Morgan – now I don’t.

Reedus as Daryl can never be messed with – both in character and out. I just enjoy his performance as Daryl because he doesn’t necessarily need dialogue to get his point across. Losing his bike and bow are reason enough to be afraid of him but this season he has some introspection that I think is going to serve him well in Season 7.

AMC is home to some of the most popular and acclaimed programs on television. Their lineup has included Mad Men and Breaking Bad with original dramas continuing with Better Call Saul, Halt and Catch Fire, Hell on Wheels, Into the Badlands, Humans as well as Fear The Walking Dead. Don’t think they are finished as the new series Feed the Beast, The Son and The Terror are coming soon! To go deeper into these series visit

TUBS OF POPCORN: Are you kidding? Of course I give THE WALKING DEAD: The Complete Sixth Season five tubs of popcorn out of five. There is absolutely nothing about this series I would change (even when I’m screaming my head off saying “that’s so wrong I can’t stand it! or “oh no they didn’t!” or “this is just b.s.”) and legions of fans would probably agree with me.

Yes we get emotional, yes we get crazy, yes we think that creator Robert Kirkman is systematically trying to drive us insane with cliffhangers and season breaks but yet we will come back – time after time. Why?

Because the characters are intense, the storylines are epic, set designs are nothing short of amazing, the cinematography is breath-stealing and SFX-god Greg Nicotero knows exactly how to make us freak out with epic zombies. Does that answer your question?

The Walking Dead: The Complete Sixth Season on Bluray includes Inside The Walking Dead (on DVD), Episode 616: Last Day on Earth – Extended Version (on Bluray), Audio Commentaries, Deleted Scenes (which I LOOOOOVED), The Making of “The Walking Dead, In Memoriam, 601: Out of the Quarry, Guts & Glory: The Death of Nicholas, Strength in Bonds, Negan: Someone to Fear and The Face of Death: Iconic Walkers of the Season. Three hours of extra content is just the beginning of what can be the most amazing marathon watching!

THE WALKING DEAD is a series that is worthy of being a part of anyone’s home media library because fans of the comic book and series will never get tired of revisiting the beginning of this storyline up until the Negan line up! This fall fans will be glued to their television on the premier of Season 7 and yes, I am one of them.

In the end – sometimes it isn’t the Walkers they need to fear!

DEADPOOL on Bluray Means Comedy Anytime!

deadpool cover

Jeri Jacquin

On Bluray this week from director Tim Miller, Marvel and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment comes the anti-hero film in the red suit looking like DEADPOOL.

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a mercenary who doesn’t play well with – well most anyone. For a price he will take care of any problem you may have and do it with relish. It becomes even more exciting when he meets his match in Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) who has the same cutting wit!

Life seems to be going happy between the two until Wilson get’s bad news. Of course when bad news comes there is usually a vulture not too far behind in the form of Merchant (Kyle Cassie). Offering him a way to get better, Wilson decides its far better to stay with Vanessa to do what he can to stay alive.

dead 2

Enter Ajax (Ed Skrein), an evil mutant who enjoys making more mutants and sidekick Angel Dust (Gina Carano). Immediately Wilson and Ajax show signs of not having a loving relationship. When Wade gets the chance he escape the horror, he heads to friend and pub owner Weasel (T.J. Miller) for help.

That is when Deadpool is born! Discovering his powers quite quickly, Deadpool’s only interest is to find Ajax so as to change him back into Wilson. In the meantime, living with Blind Al (Leslie Uggams), Deadpool keeps moving forward in his goal – and pretty much delights in every moment of it.

The problem also is that there are certain X-men who want to stop him – mainly Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand). When Ajax takes Vanessa hostage, Deadpool loads up and brings his two new friends with him.

Because THIS showdown is going to be epic!

dead `

Reynolds as Wilson/Deadpool is so frakken-awesome-amazing-stellar-brilliant-hilarious-disturbing-jawdropping and everything I want in my super anti-hero! It is no surprise that Reynolds throws out his lines with quickness and the right amount of venom to make each word hilarious. The jaw dropping that happened for me just made the laughter even crazier and added to the fun of it all. The best part was everyone else had the same response.

It was also come as no surprise that Reynolds’ physical appearance was frakken hot and although I’m not into old-avocado looking body types – I might have to rethink it after seeing his. That’s what has been missing for me in this super hero universe and Deadpool had no problem serving it up with ice cream on top!

Skrein as Ajax manages to provide Wilson/Deadpool with all the ammunition necessary for more jabs – verbally and literally. Skrein makes a fairly good mutant bad guy and I wracked my brain as to where I had seen that gorgeous overbite. Of course it took one smile to recognize him as Daario Naharis from Game of Thrones who hit on the Mother of Dragons a few times.

dead 5

Carano as Angel Dust is such a bad ass I can’t stand it. Of course I have a soft spot for anyone that kicks Michael Fassbinder’s behind as bad as she did in HAYWIRE (if you haven’t seen this fight we can’t speak until you do!). Once again Carano gets a chance to back flip, smack, punch and be as bad as she wants to be.

Kapicic as Colossus tries recruiting Deadpool but you can’t make a bad boy go good, especially after listening to DP’s speech as to why. Hildebrand as Warhead is kinda cute in a rebellious-smart-ass-sullen-flaming-teen sort of way.

Baccarin as Vanessa gives as good as she gets when it comes to the verbal banter with Wilson. It seems the two were made for one another when saying everything but just stopping short of playing the dozens! It’s good to see Baccarin has a thing for heroes and let’s just hope that Jim Gordon will be understanding or else Gotham will get kind of lonely.

Two comedic stand outs here (besides Reynolds): T.J. Miller as Weasel is the bar owner who has his own dead pool with betting galore. He is that friend who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is, even when a friend isn’t looking his best.

The other is Leslie Uggams as Big Al who had me cracking up from the laundry room scene onward. It is so great to see her again and to take on this role opposite Reynolds, it must be said they are amazing together.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give DEADPOOL ten tubs of popcorn out of five. What?! – you ask? Has Jeri lost what little bit is left of her mind? How is it possible to have ten tubs of popcorn out of five? 1) I was never good at math, 2) because no one can’t stop me! (insert evil bwhahahaha laugh here!), finally 3) because Deadpool has given me ‘testicles with teeth’ to just throw it all out there and see what sticks! Thank you Deadpool for the inspiration!

Now, back to the film! DEADPOOL is crude, rude, insulting, mocking, ugly, snappy, with every juvenile joke you can think of (and some you probably didn’t), action oriented, sharp, cutting, jaw dropping and every other descriptor you can imagine in the 107 minutes and more on Bluray.

Of course, when referring to director Tim Miller as ‘an overpaid tool’ in the opening credits, you immediately know that THIS film is going to be a no holds barred epic journey of delightfulness. Reynolds has no problem making fun of himself, of his green friend that rhymes with ‘banter’, the film TAKEN (I want to see a match up of Deadpool and Mills) and my favorite – teasing a mutant teenager with mood swings! Understand there isn’t a moment of the film I didn’t like.

dead 3

The Bluray includes the Special Features of: Deleted/Extended Scenes with Optional Audio Commentary by Director Tim Miller, Gag Reel (Safe Word Not Included), From Comics to Screen…to Screen, DeadPool’s Fun Sack, Audio Commentary with director Tim Miller and DeadPool Co-Creator Rob Liefeld, Audio Commentary with Ryan Reynolds and Writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, and finally Galleries with Concept Art, Storyboards, Costumes, Pre-Vis and Stunt-Vis and so much spandex!

Trust me when I tell you that every bit of the special feature section has laughs galore! Having the Bluray means I am all in for wearing the disc out. Is that possible? Who knows but I’m going to give it a serious try and I’m sure I will get two middle fingers up from Deadpool himself!

In the end – justice has a new face!
