WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE? Questions Life on Bluray

bernadette Cover
Jeri Jacquin
Coming to Bluray from director writer/director Richard Linklater, Anna Purna Pictures and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is best seller by Maria Semple come to screen with WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE?
Wife and Mom Bernadette (Cate Blanchett) is having a bit of a problem. First, she hates people with the exception of husband Elgin (Billy Crudup) and daughter Bee (Emma Nelson) which causes problems for everyone around her. Second, she hates to leave the house being perfectly happy staying away from said other human beings. The one person who seems to test both of these is neighbor Audrey (Kristen Wiig).
From bushes to mothers talking behind her back to blaming Seattle for her erratic emotions, Bernadette learns Bee wants a family trip to Antarctica. Seeing that husband Elgin is emotionally away, a plan is thrust into action to try and keep the family moving forward. The problem is Elgin has already decided that Bernadette needs an intervention after discovering she has been using a virtual assistant that is actually wanted by the FBI.
where 2
Informing her that he will be taking Bee on the family trip, Bernadette finds a way to escape the situation and heads for the snow by herself. From making a friend to being a stow away, Bee and Elgin are hot on her trail realizing that all they want is Bernadette to be happy!
Blanchett as Bernadette is comical yet I understand her. Her grouchiness with people keeps her creativity flowing in how to irritate them more than they irritate her. Although I wouldn’t go so far as the sign she posted, I get it, I totally get it. Perhaps that is why I went on this journey with the character, when she discovers that life has been keeping her weighed down in the most twisted of ways, we cheer her ability to recognize and jump outside her comfort zone. I’m not sure I need to go to Antarctica but far away where there is warm beaches is a thought. That is the brilliance of Blanchett, she has always made her characters relatable and Bernadette, although slightly off kilter, is what I have come to expect.
Nelson as Bee has an attachment to her mother that is both loving and protective. She knows Mom isn’t exactly like all the other Moms but then again, it’s her Mom and no one, and she means NO ONE is going to change the life they have. Loving her father, she also realizes that he is partially responsible for the slipshod way the family is being handled. Nelson is such a delight to watch and even when she stands up for the situation, who could ever help but do whatever she needs to make her world right.
Crudup as Elgin is a husband who is basically moving on autopilot when it comes to his wife and daughter. Knowing that Bernadette was always different, it is the same story that what was adorable at the beginning of a relationship is no longer so adorable. Trying to sustain and shrug off his wife’s behavior as ‘oh well’ isn’t working for him so he turns to an intervention. Even daughter Bee knows the way he handled it was nothing short of a bone head plan. It takes extremely cold temperatures for Crudup’s character to snap back into reality.
where 3
Wiig as Audrey is hilarious in a really gotta-hate-that-neighbor sort of way but there is another side that is revealed and very touching. Fishburne stops by as Jellinek is someone who knows Bernadette and after a five minute quick rant realizes what we all do, that she needs to get her butt back to work!
Other cast include James Urbaniak as Marcus, Judy Greer as Dr. Kurtz, Troian Bellisario as Becky, Claudia Doumit as Iris, Katelyn Statton as Vivian and Laurence Fishburne as Paul Jellinek.

WHERE’D YOU GO, BERNADETTE? is a film that doesn’t give a moment to rest up between scenes because that is not who Bernadette is. Her brain and mouth are going light speed and everyone around her is exhausted trying to keep up. She doesn’t see it because that would mean accepting that she has fallen into a hole that she can’t build her way out of.
where 1
That is the sad part of the film, that she doesn’t recognize what has been happening to her life. It takes a few slaps to wake her up and wanting to fix it becomes her new fixation. The problem is everyone around her has already had enough, unfortunately that includes husband Elgin.
So, this is a film that carries so many themes and it is Blanchett that carries the weight of it all. Nelson and Crudup do their character best to keep up but I’m giving this one to Blanchett. There are times in the film that are so genuinely relatable to so many people in that sometimes it all gets away from us. We all feel the effects of warp speed living and this film gives us a chance to understand that slowing down and making time to do the things we love for those we love is imperative.
And – remember that it’s absolutely acceptable to love ourselves as well. Those around us are perfectly capable of seeing when we don’t so let’s not fool ourselves any longer. You don’t have to go to Antarctica to bring happiness to life so pick a spot on the map and go for it.
In the end – disappearances can be deceiving!

In DONKEY’S CAROLING CHRISTMAS-TACULAR has Donkey thrilled about the holiday parties and the apple bobbing, stockings and everyone singing Christmas carols. Chicago is now floating and someone’s got to fix it. Oh also learns about the different customs and how we all celebrate with the ones we love. Kelly Clarkson brings her voice to Oh Holy Night!
rise
As an amazing bonus the full film of RISE OF THE GUARDIANS which has become a holiday must-see in my family. Jack Frost (Chris Pine) is being called on by North aka Santa (Alec Baldwin), the Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Sandman, the Tooth (Isla Fischer) to help them fight the very dangerous Pitch (Jude Law).
Pitch wants to make children forget about the wonderful holidays that bring them so much joy by replacing it all with fear and darkness. The Guardians aren’t about to let that happen and Jack, although not quite a Guardian, is also in to help. He has friends as Jamie (Dakota Goyo), Caleb (Khmani Griffin), Claude (Kamil McFadden), Sophie (Georgie Grieve) and Monty (Jacob Bertrand) are about to show Jack what true friendship means!
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has just added an amazing film to their library and making it available for us to all experience and re-experience in our own home theaters. There are film of every genre available from scary to drama to family films. For more of what they have to offer please visit www.uphe.com.
DreamWorks Animation brings amazing animated entertainment to films, television specials and series for the young and young at heart audiences around the world. For more of what they have to offer please visit http://www.dreamworksanimation.com.
The Bonus Features of this collection are Shrek’s Yule Log, 12 Days of Christmas Pop-up Book, 4 Penguins Sing-Along Videos and so much more!
This is just an absolutely fantastic edition to anyone, like me, who has a home entertainment library section dedicated to the holidays. Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, I had my share of holiday favorites that are still being shown yearly even to this very day. That being said there is certainly nothing wrong with opening up hearts and homes to additional stories.
All of these are about home, love, friendship, family (and everyone you love is family), standing up for the right thing, defending those who need defending and all the craziness that can be found during the season.
Of course there is chaos and a little mayhem, but there is also singing, dancing, sharing and enjoying each other’s company through it all. What this ultimate collection truly does is remind us of the season in ways that we sometimes forget during the year and to seriously lighten up a little, okay a lot!
In the end – if you are going to have the ultimate of holidays then you need the ultimate collection!

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: The Hidden World

how to train hidden world

Jeri Jacquin

Flying into theatres this Friday from writer/director Dean DeBlois and DreamWorks Animation is the return to Berk and our favorite characters in HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: The Hidden World.

Life in Berk has been busy and becoming slightly crowded as Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), Toothless and Astrid (America Ferrera) lead their friends on adventures to stop the capture of their winged friends. That is went Hiccup remembers his father Stoick (Gerard Butler) telling him the story of the Hidden World that is considered a safe haven for dragons.

Thinking they would search further out for it, Hiccup meets Grimmel the Grisly (F. Murray Abraham) who finds out that after hunting all the Night Fury’s – there is one left! He tells Hiccup to turn over his dragon or watch the destruction of everything around him.

train 1

What the leader doesn’t know is that a beautiful white Light Fury has caught the attention of Toothless and he is smitten from moment one. Hiccup must tell his people what Grimmel is planning and they decide to leave Berk and look for the Hidden World together.

Discovering a beautiful island, they rest for a short while which gives Hiccup time to plan their next move and give Toothless time to be with the dragon of his dreams. Mom Valka (Cate Blanchett) flies back towards Berk to see how long they have before Grimmel’s attack ships get to them.

Hiccup and Astrid follow toothless and discover the Hidden World and see for themselves the beauty the dragons have built for themselves. They also see that Toothless has become their leader and when they try to protect their Alpha, Toothless is forces to save his friend.

All of this has fallen straight into the hands of Grimmel who captures Toothless and Light Fury and that doesn’t sit well with dragons or the people of Berk. Friendship and loyalty come together to fight for each other!

train 3

Baruchel as Hiccup returns to finish the story he began telling us from the first film in 2010. He is now a young leader still trying to find his place and Toothless is his touchstone. Astrid is still strong on his life and he wants a bigger future with her but the crowding of the village takes precedent at the moment. My family has come to adore Hiccup as his frailties and flaws are right out front. He has become an important animated role model and there certainly isn’t anything wrong with that (just ask my granddaughter).

Ferrera returns as Astrid who has also grown in her role as a strong woman in the middle of a little dragon madness. She supports Hiccup but doesn’t forget who she is and what she has to offer the village. Blanchett as Valka is another strong warrior presence in the village even if she has an admirer that brings us all giggles.

Abraham as Grimmel is a man who just needs a hug or something. Killing off all the other Night Fury’s, he is hostile when discovering he missed one. He plots and plans to get Toothless and is patient to make that happen.

Ferguson as Gobber is still hilarious and full of wisdom in a twisted sort of way that I enjoy. Hill returns as Snotlout and has plenty to say even though I’m not sure he realizes how silly he is. Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fishlegs has totally embraced dragon motherhood. Justin Rupple as Tuffnut who tries to give Hiccup marriage advice but it’s hard to take seriously a guy who fakes his beard. Kristen Wiig as Ruffnut who is tough and mouthy yet – I like her.

train 2

Kit Harington returns as Eret who fits into the Berk pack like he was always meant to be there. Robin Downes as Ack, Kieron Elliott as Hoark, Gideon Emery as Trapper and Julia Emelin as Griselda the Grevious.

How to Train Your Dragon is a twelve book series by author Cressida Cowell. The first book published in 2003 has been a huge success and the books can be found world wide. DreamWorks Animation has also brought the dragons to the smaller screen with an animated television series that kids just love. I mean having dragons more often is always a good thing!

This final film in the series is beautiful and laced with everything we have come to expect from Hiccup, Toothless, Berk and the entire gang. What is even more stunning about the film is that as each of the films has gone along, so has the timeline for the characters. In this film that have each come into their own and made a memorable place in their community.

train 4

Much of the time we don’t see the progression of animated characters if there is more than one. In the HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON trilogy, we have seen Hiccup grow from a young boy to a man and Toothless grow by his side (along with the rest of Berk). The series has dealt with life and death as well as everything in between when a community is as close as this one is.

Each film has made me laugh hilariously; get teary eyed a little and even now will openly admit to moments where an ‘awwwwwww’ or two escapes my lips. I had the pleasure of screening the film with my granddaughter who not only had the best time but wanted her parents to read the How to Train Your Dragon books (three times today alone).

I am thrilled with the way DreamWorks closed the trilogy and as much as I know I’m going to miss visiting the characters of Berk, the storyline of the closure was epic and satisfying in a heartwarming way.

In the end – their final quest and the friendship of a lifetime!

DESPICABLE ME 3 Expands the Family Fun on Bluray!

despic 3

Jeri Jacquin

Get the family together because they family is back on Bluray & DVD from directors Eric Guillon, Kyle Balda and Pierre Cofflin along with Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment with DESPICABLE ME 3.

Gru (Steve Carell) and Lucy (Kristen Wiig) are on their next mission for the Anti-Villain League going after Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), a once child star who took his role into adulthood. With his keytair and 80’s dance moves, Bratt gets away with a diamond as large as his head!

Returning to the AVL headquarters, Silas Ramsbottom (Steve Coogan) announces that he will be stepping down. Taking his job is Valerie Da Vinci (Jenny Slate) and her first move is to fire Gru. Lucy threatens to walk if she follows through with the firing and now both are out of a job. The Minions aren’t happy when Gru refuses to return to villainy and stage a walk out.

Going home to explain it all to Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Nev Scharrel), the parents assure the girls it will all work out. That’s when a stranger shows up and announces that Gru has a twin brother names Dru (also voiced by Steve Carell). Not believing it Gru forces his Mom (Julie Andrews) and he learns the truth about his family.

des 1

Packing the family up, they fly to Dru’s luxurious estate and Gru learns more about who his father was. He also learns that Dru wants to be villainous and it’s Gru’s chance to capture Bratt while Lucy works on her Mom-skills. Bratt isn’t about to make anything easy as he has plans for tinsel town.

In their efforts to strengthen their family, Gru, Lucy and Dru along with the girls learn that love of family is amazing and there is no bad guy big enough to break them apart!

Recently at CinemaCon, Steve Carell spoke about his iconic work as Gru saying the DESPICABLE ME franchise is filled with “characters that are funny for adults as well as kids and that’s what has made it all successful”. How did the voice of Gru come to be? Carell says, “I tried voices on my daughter and when I did the voice of Gru they told me that was the one. Gru’s voice was like I flew over Eastern Europe and Dru’s voice had to be different. It had to be very fun, free and giddy in a way”.

Wiig as Lucy is trying her best to be a good Mom and it takes being herself to let everyone know that no one messes with Mama Bear! I just think the character of Lucy is crazy cool. Cosgrove, Gaier and Scharrel as Margo, Edith and Agnes are just girls growing up in a different household that is filled with unexpected adventure and they roll with it.

Parker as Bratt had me cracking up! His shoulder pads, keytar and dance moves along with a balding mullet and bubblegum means he isn’t about to let Gru, Dru, Lucy or anyone else stop him from a little Hollywood payback.

des 3

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has just added an amazing film to their library and making it available for us all to experience and re-experience in our own home theatres. There are films of every genre available from scary to drama to family films. For more of what they have to offer please visit www.uphe.com.

The Bluray & DVD also includes the Bonus Features Deleted Scenes, Minion Moments, Character Profiles, The Making of Despicable Me 3, Developing Dru, The AVL Files, Freedonia Visitors Guide, Despicable Me TV, “Doowit” Sing-Along, “Yellow Light” Music Video and the All New Mini Movie: The Secret Life of Kyle.

DESPICABLE ME 3 is going to give families over and over again everything they have come to love about Gru, the girls and even the minions. This may not be the average family but it sure is one filled with love, excitement, understanding and fun. One would have thought that completed the family.

des 2

Of course not, Illumination expands their family with Dru and a unicorn, well of sorts, which means a double dose of excitement. There are the usual jokes with the minions trying to be jail house rockers but they know where they truly belong. The animation is strong, vibrant and has such creativity that I am always surprised yet not surprised.

Gru and Dru have found one another which means Lucy and the girls have their hands full. That doesn’t have to be a bad thing but if Illumination wants one more story line I have a few ideas that I wouldn’t mind sharing!

So gather up your own minions, fill up the popcorn bowl and cuddle on the sofa with holiday family fun of the family kind with DESPICABLE ME 3.

In the end – ohhhhhhhh brother it’s good to be bad!

MASTERMINDS Steals Laughs on Bluray

masterminds-bluray

Jeri Jacquin

Planning to heist on Bluray and DVD this week from director Jared Hess and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is a plan put together by MASTERMINDS, sort of.

David (Zach Galifianakis) is a man of simple means. Having big dreams early in life, he has settled for a rather routine one as a driver for Loomis armored car service. Engaged to Jandice (Kate McKinnon) he is going along to get along while dreaming of a more adventurous time. His day got better the moment that Kelly (Kristen Wiig) walked through the Loomis doors.

master-1

Striking up a friendship with Kelly, it becomes clear that friendship is not all David sees with crush in his eyes. The two share talks and laughs together which is something he doesn’t have at home. Having lunch together in the Loomis lunchroom, Kelly gets in the face of the boss and she’s had enough. Walking out is the heartbreak David is use to as he goes back to his routine.

Kelly has other plans when partner Steve (Owen Wilson) want to get their hands on what is inside the vaults at Loomis. Devising a plan to get his grubby hands on the cash, he enlists Kelly talking her into using David’s feelings for her as a way in. After everything that can go wrong does go wrong, David still manages to escape with $17 million dollars. Kelly puts David on a plane to get away with the promise that she would join him as soon as the heat is off.

What she doesn’t know is that Steve has other plans which include a psychotic hit man Mike McKinney (Jason Sudeikis) who takes his job very seriously. Once David realizes what has happened, he puts the big girl panties on and makes a master plan of his own!

Galifianakis as David is simple and settled in the uniform wearing life. This is a character that he makes seem easy to play and perhaps it’s because we have caught glimpses of him before (which I don’t mind as long as it makes me laugh!). From the character of Alan in THE HANGOVER series of films to taking on Will Ferrell as Marty Huggins in THE CAMPAIGN, his way of getting laughs is by being the straight guy but in such a unique way that he really isn’t! The haircut kept me captivated the entire film!

master-2

Wiig as Kelly is an out spoken gal who isn’t going to take anything from her Loomis boss yet pretty much lets Steve lead her around for the sake of a few bucks. Using her feminine wiles to get David to do her bidding gives her several moments of pause about doing the right thing by a sweet guy who happens to be crushing on her. Wiig has made a successful career out of playing the victim while victimizing with her sheepish grin and innocent eyes.

Wilson as Steve – see douche bag in the dictionary and this guy’s picture would be right there. He uses everyone and everything letting the money get to his head. Wilson’s character just smooth talks everyone and isn’t about to let anyone take a dollar from his nice home filled with drums of money.

McKinnon as Jandice had me howling with laughter. It is talent to make someone laugh using expression and body language but it is an EXCEPTIONAL  talent who can cause laughing by barely using any facial expressions at all. This is a jewel character and McKinnon embraces it to the point of perfection. I lost it totally during the scenes between her, Galifianakis and the photographer. I’m going to bet there are tons of outtakes just with her and I’d love to see them.

master-3

Sudeikis as McKinney the psycho hit man is another brilliant character. A hit man who finds friendship at the end of a silencer is a character that deserves applause.  I think maybe he and Jandice should get together because there could be magic there. Sudeikis gets a chance to be cheesy, crazy and a friend all at the same time which I don’t think is a bad gig at all.

Other cast include Mary Elizabeth Ellis as Michelle, Ken Marino as Doug, Leslie Jones as Detective, Devin Ratray as Runny, Jill Jane Clements as Beryl and Daniel Zacapa as Quintero.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment brings award-winning global product and new entertainment to DVD, Bluray, and Digital HD. There amazing collection offers fans an opportunity to expand their own home libraries with the best films. To discover what other titles they have please visit www.fox.com.

master-4

MASTERMINDS is a slapstick comedy filled with the silliest characters yet – it works! Galifianakis leads this band of merry masterminds and pretty much steals the show. Get ready to use every range of giggling, chuckling, snorting, and laughing in your arsenal because the jokes are either in-your-face or “what did he/she just say?” I appreciate that subtle sense of comedy and MASTERMINDS delivers.

This is a film that is worthy of ordering pizzas, a couple of six packs, call all your comedy loving friends and make a movie night of it (they will thank you!). MASTERMINDS is quirky, funny, twisted, and, like the heist, a simple plan for a good time. The Bluray & DVD comes in at an hour and a half with Special Features that include The Imperfect Crime.

In the end – someone is about to get stupid rich!

GHOSTBUSTERS – Just Don’t Call Me

ghostbusters poster

Jeri Jacquin

Who are you going to call this Friday in theatres when director Paul Feig and Columbia Pictures blare out the sirens announcing GHOSTBUSTERS.

Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) is excited about the possibility of obtaining tenure at her college. That is until a book she wrote several years ago with Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) about the paranormal shows up online and threatens it all.

Her only recourse is to confront Abby and force her to remove the book from online. Arriving at a lab she talks with Abby and also meets mad scientist Jillian (Kate McKinnon). She isn’t there five minutes before they are called to a ghostly sighting! Erin and Abby make a deal and off they ride.

Of course there is a ghost and it isn’t a happy one. When a video of the encounter hits YouTube, any possibility of tenure is out the window for Erin. She joins the group and they decide to work together to find answers.

ghost 3

In the subways of New York works Patty (Leslie Jones), a woman who isn’t afraid to investigate strange disturbances in the tunnel. When she sees a ghost, it’s off to meet the girls who can help. Also in the new offices of the Ghostbusters is Kevin (Chris Hemsworth) who is their model looking absent minded receptionist.

As more ghosts hit the streets, the women now joined by Patty try to learn who is responsible for waking up these sleeping ghosts!

Now for the hard part – McCarthy as Abby is her usual funny self and she looks great. Wiig as Erin is just sad and I think I’ll just leave it at that. Jones just becomes a Ghostbusters in ten seconds? Hemsworth is just embarrassing as Kevin and I wanted him to go away.

The winner here is McKinnon as Jillian! She is insanely crazy, hilarious, unexpected and I had no idea what she was going to do next but I knew it was going to be good. Her one-liners cracked me up and I’d watch the film again just to hear the ones I might have missed. She saved me from insanity. I just loved her!

There are characters that show up in the film that just made me sad because of how they were used in the film. Going to say right now – the “creature” at the end looks HORRIBLE, like they couldn’t afford any more special effects so they used an old Mac to whip something up.

Other cast include Neil Casey as Rowan North, Michael McDonald as Jonathan, Steve Higgins as Dean, Bess Rous as Gertrude the Ghost, Karan Soni as Bennie, Zach Woods as Tour Guide, Ed Begley Jr., as Ed Mulgrave, Charles Dance as Harold Filmore, Ozzy Osbourne as himself.

Of course there are cameos by Annie Potts, Ernie Hudson, Dan Akroyd and the ever adorable and beloved Bill Murray.

TUBS OF POPCORN: I give GHOSTBUSTERS three tubs of popcorn out of five. I know this isn’t going to make many people happy but once again this was an unnecessary remake. Look folks, I’m just plain tired of watching films that I’ve, in essence, seen already. I keep hearing ‘oh it’s for a new generation to experience’, really? Ever heard of movies on DVD? I also know I’m supposed to be supportive of the female cast being that I happen to be one myself. Nope, doesn’t work that way and you can’t sway me with body parts. The 1984 version of GHOSTBUSTERS can not be touched in my mind and anything that does just irks me to no end.

Was this story original? Of course not. It is just me or did this feel like 1989 GHOSTBUSTERS II with the squirrely Janosz who is demoted from a Dr. to hotel crazy Rowan North in this film. The story is just all over the place which pretty much blinds the viewer into realizing there is no explanation for anything! There were so many things that just felt wrong I don’t know where to begin.

I thought the 2-second look at a gold bust of Dr. Egon Spengler will quite easily be by-passed by the audience who doesn’t realize it happened and I was bummed. Giving Bill Murray that ridiculous role was just so painful to watch and I think it does him and his original character a disservice. Annie Potts cracked me up totally! Dan Akroyd gets a chance to utter a line and Hudson comes in ridiculously. That’s how I feel about it so sorry, not sorry.

If this was supposed to be a new telling of GHOSTBUSTERS I would have preferred that none of the original characters be in the film. All it did was remind me how ridiculous it was that anyone allowed this film to be made. See what happens when you mess with my film memories? Yea, unhappy camper.

The original cast of GHOSTBUSTERS might not have wanted to make another film in the franchise and with that I would have let it go but noooooooooo, Hollywood once again tries to destroy fantastic memories of a fantastic film. I’m still fighting for a 100 year moratorium on remakes I mean seriously, what till I’m dead please to remake another film.

I’m sure that those who won’t take the time to watch the original films will be tickled by this version of GHOSTBUSTERS but who hasn’t seen the original? I’d think it would be anyone under 2.

In the end – who you going to call.

THE MARTIAN is Brilliant with an Extended Edition on Bluray

the martian

Jeri Jacquin & Jenise Jacquin

This week with an all new extended edition is a 7-time Academy Award nominated film from director Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment about a man who becomes THE MARTIAN.

Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is with his crew including Lewis (Jessica Chastain), Martinez (Michael Pena), Johanssen (Kate Mara) and Beck (Sebastian Stan) on Mars conducting research. All is going well, that is until a storm comes in stronger than anyone had anticipated.

In one moment the team’s lives are in danger as the storm is tilting their ship. Getting everyone on board for an emergency lift off, the wind whips up debris throwing Watney to the wind. Believing he is dead the crew has no choice but to lift off to safety.

When the storm passes, it becomes clear that Watney survived! Getting back to the base station, he quickly goes into survival mode. He begins to assess his supplies and what he can use to reach NASA.

Stunned, mission control on earth with Ted Sanders (Jeff Daniels), Annie Montrose (Kristen Wiig), Mitch Henderson (Sean Bean) and Vincent Kapoor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) try to come up with a rescue plan. It is out of nowhere that Rich Purnell (Donald Glover) gives them an option that they hadn’t considered.

Now it is a race between the rescue team and Watney’s ability to stay alive!

Damon as Watney is absolutely amazing. We certainly had concerns with his recent astronaut experience with Interstellar but we shouldn’t have been. He takes this role as a man left to his own devices on the red planet and just thrills from one problem solved to the next. Damon’s ability to use comedy in the middle of some scary stuff doesn’t diminish the fear, just gives us moments of nervous laughter as a release. Yes, we are Damon fans.

Chastain as Lewis and Mara as Johanssen are strong female characters who don’t take orders from the guys very well. Stan as Beck absolutely wants to break the rules to bring his friend home and there is a little love connection with Johanssen.

Pena as Martinez is an actor who consistently brings it to the screen. There isn’t a role he has done that we don’t like and THE MARTIAN once again proves he is a talent that has so much more to offer.

Daniels as Sanders gets a chance to wear his bad guy-character suit. Of course some might say he’s just doing his job as the head of NASA, but there are moments we questioned whether he wants Watney to come home!

Glover as Purnell is a whiz kid who has to convince others he knows what he’s doing. This is a guy with a big brain and a lot of coffee intake! Wiig as Montrose is disaster control and it’s interesting to watch this usual comedic actress stand there with a straight face, kind of scary really.

Ejiofor as Kapoor turns in a solid performance with a role soaked to the gills in science, Math, quantum physics and anything else one would have to know where Mars and a rescue are concerned.

Bean as Henderson is as bad ass as he wants to be. From the moment his character comes into the storyline it’s easy to see Henderson isn’t about to take any b.s. from anyone. He is combative, sarcastic, direct, snarky and has a few tricks up his sleeves and every bit of Bean’s portrayal had us cheering for him.

Other cast include: Aksel Hennie as Alex Vogel, Nick Mohammed as Tim Grimes, Mackenzie Davis as Mindy Park, Zhu Tao as Chen Shu, Eddie Ko as Guo Ming and Sebastian Stan as Chris Beck.

TUBS OF POPCORN: We give THE MARTIAN: Extended Edition five tubs of popcorn out of five. Matt Damon makes the entire film so fantastic to watch with his portrayal of Watney – or as we called him the Martian McGyver. The film is visually stunning with storyline and characters just keep it flowing in beautiful Bluray on a nice big home screen.

This is a film for everybody because it does have so much to offer. Damon deserves every accolade for this performance. Want to see what an actor can really do? Put him on Mars with some potatoes and prepared to be amazed.

Ridley Scott is a director that deserves so much respect, not only does THE MARTIAN prove it to us but his track record says so as well. Maybe a few of these film titles will ring a bell with ALIEN(S), LEGEND, THELMA & LOUISE, G.I. JANE, GLADIATOR, AMERICAN GANGSTER, PROMETHEUS, and now THE MARTIAN, so mad props!

mar 3

The Bluray comes in a 2-disc set along with Digital HD with ten extra minutes of unseen footage. New Special Features with this set include Audio Commentary by director Ridley Scott, Writer and Executive Producer Drew Goddard and the author of The Martian Andy Weir, Deleted Scenes, The Long Way Home: Making The Martian, Dare Mighty Things: NASA’s Journey to Mars and Journey to Mars 101 Q&A.

This Bluray is truly brilliant with both the theatrical version of the film as well as the extended cut. If you waited to get your own copy of THE MARTIAN, wait no more! This is the edition you want for your home entertainment library.

In the end – help is only 140 million miles away!
