YESTERDAY Has Music and Love on Bluray

Yesterday cover

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Ultra 4K HD, Bluray/DVD and currently on Digital from director Danny Boyle and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Is a story of a crazy moment in time, THE BEATLES and a bit of YESTERDAY.

Jack Malik (Himesh Patel) is a struggling musician in the UK who pushes his career but doesn’t seem to find that one break. Ellie (Lily James) has taken the mantle of friend/roadie and manager believing that he has something to offer through his music. Thinking that it’s time to give it all up, there is a strange blackout and Jack is knocked out.

He wakes up to the same world but with one interesting difference, no one seems to have heard of The Beatles. Jack knows every song and every note of their work and decides to play their songs to see what happens. Well, what happens is he is heard by Gavin (Alexander Arnold) who wants to immediately record everything Jack wants to record.

yesterday 1

It turns into a phenomenon and now everyone wants to hear his music, including music executive Debra Hammer (Kate McKinnon). Everything begins to move into high gear and Ellie can’t go where Jack is headed and brings Rocky (Joel Fry) in to look after him. On a whirlwind, Jack finds himself dealing with what is happening and the fact that Ellie now seems so very far away.

Taking notice is musician Ed Sheeran who believes Jack to be the most epic singer/songwriter of the ages. In fact he asks Jack to be part of his opening act. Jack is in awe of all these opportunities that he is being handed but in the back of his mind he knows they are being handed to the wrong person.

That doesn’t mean the weirdness has stopped either but one thing is for sure, Jack must decide if he wants to continue to ride the rollercoaster of fortune and fame or now.

Patel as Malik is a young man who at first doesn’t understand what has made his world turn and is then confused how no one knows who The Beatles are but finds himself wrapped in their musical history. There is the struggle playing the music and feeling a bit of euphoria in the attention. Of course, with all things dishonest, Patel comes to terms with what he could possible lose by continuing the farce. Patel shows every bit of emotion on his face and also in the way he sings.

James as Ellie believes in Malik and doesn’t mind being the roadie/manager on the weekend. Once Malik takes off musically, she comes to terms with the fact that she is not able to follow but also the feelings about her friend. James is sweet and lovely but then again she always is.

yesterday 3

McKinnon as Hammer becomes Malik’s agent but dang if she doesn’t creep me out with a dash of fright added to it. A very intense manager she doesn’t pull any punches and expects Malik to fall in line if he wants to be the biggest in music of all time. I love when McKinnon goes rogue in a character and here she really gets a chance to go off the rails.

It must be said that Rocky (Fry) is an absolute gem. He is the friend we all wish we had and for me it’s because his honesty is brutally funny, he truly cares for Malik and might even have a secret crush on Ellie. He tries to stay out of his friends way but always manages to get a word in anyway.

Ed Sheeran gets a chance to show his musical chops with acting – as himself. I love the interaction between Sheeran and Patel in the kitchen as a case of star struck and ‘who is this?’ happens in one room.

Other cast include Sophia Di Martino as Carol, Ellize Chappel as Lucy, Meera Syal as Sheila Malik, Harry Michell as Nick, Vincent Franklin as Brian, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Jed Malik, Alexander Arnold as Gavin and Robert Carlyle as John. Cameo appearances by James Corden and Ed Sheeran.

The Bonus Features on 4K Ultra HD, Bluray, DVD and Digital include Alternate Opening, Alternate Ending, Deleted Scenes, Gag Reel, Live at Abbey Road Studios and Watch Himesh Patel Perform the Song ‘Yesterday’ and More, Ed Sheeran: From Stadium to Screen, Agent of Comedy: Kate McKinnon, A Talented Duo, Playing for Real, Soul Mates, A Conversation with Richard & Ed and Feature Commentary with Director Danny Boyle and Writer/Producer Richard Curtis.

YESTERDAY is a film that takes on our memories of The Beatles in such a way that I found myself thinking ‘wow, what if no one did remember The Beatles?’. It is such an impossibility in my world which makes the film even more endearing. Here is this musician without a cause and when he finds one it happens to be due to one of the biggest influences in music history.

I was actually very honored to hear Himesh Patel perform one of The Beatles songs and he is amazing. Clearly talented in his own right, I can’t imagine anyone else playing the role of Jack. It is a crazy whirlwind film that even in a world without The Beatles, the same conflicts, human relationships, friendships and vices don’t really change much. What Jack brings to the film is that he is constantly in flux with the decisions he is making and never once truly becomes sucked into the world Hammer wants to create.

YESTERDAY is fun and a romantic comedy that just happens to have the fantastic songs of The Beatles in it which is the beautiful music kiss we want. There is a moment between Patel and Carlyle is about as hopeful and tearful as it gets when it comes to the original four musicians we still hold dear as The Beatles.

In the end – everyone in the world has forgotten The Beatles – except Jack!

Everyone waits impatiently on the baby news which gives Randall and Beth time to argue about careers and child raising. Toby is having trouble being a Dad and Kate won’t spend a moment away from their son. Kevin decides that maybe couples therapy is the way to go and Zoe drops a little bomb on him. us 2
As Kate’s worry for her son increases, Rebecca starts stepping a little bit out of her grandmother lane. Kate doesn’t exactly know how to handle this until her frustration spills over. Kevin and Zoe have a difficult decision to make and babysitting seems to be the way to find an answer. Randall is put in his place by a teenage Deja who reminds him how wonderful Beth truly is. This is their family…
… this is us!
Ventimiglia as Jack and Moore as Rebecca are the characters we thought we would never see, always wanted and are imperfectly perfect together. Every time they are on my television screen together I am moved, heartbroken, hopeful, understanding, a little angry, joyful and everything in between all of those. Growing up in their “time” I get it, I understand it and, in a way I miss it. A time I hold in my heart as simple in some aspect was also totally fraught with issues that are only coming to light in the past few years. Even after Jack’s death I knew there was more of his story to tell and happy to see him in flashbacks. Moore has the tough part of not only flashbacks but a different life in the present for her character. Just both so well done.
Brown and Kelechi as Randall and Beth are going at it full bore this season. They have both been used to having careers and family that go along smoothly.  Now that there are bumps in the road, either have to come to face their youthful disappointments, separate family issues never resolved and a future that seems so uncertain for their marriage. There is so much going on that they forget there are kids right in front of them seeing every bit of it, it happens.
Metz and Sullivan as Kate and Toby are about to embark on something neither believed possible. They are also dealing with the emotions of their lives and it’s time for them both to find their lane with it. Metz as Kate continues to struggle with Jack’s death which interferes with her decisions on motherhood and Sullivan is continually there for his wife and makes a decision about his own health that is dangerous. I love their humor together and admit that Toby just absolutely has my heart.
This Is Us - Season 3
Hartley and Liburd as Kevin and Zoe are a couple that I never saw fitting together. Kevin is just a hot mess trying to find his place in the world – still. Every time I think he’s finding it and happiness along with it, the pieces on his life board get moved quicker than he can adjust too. Hartley is a master of his Kevin character and this past season he kept it fast paced and uncertain. Liburd as Zoe is a woman with her own issues and good at keeping them away from Kevin.
Huertas as Miguel comes into more focus this season as we see how his own family has dealt with his marriage to Rebecca. I’m sure there is much more to has story and I hope we see more this next season. Ross as Deja is a young girl turning into a young woman with smarts beyond her years. She sees what is happening in her home and feels the needs to straighten the adults out. Kudos girl…always step in when it seems the adults are acting childish!
Angarano as young Nick is a kid just looking for a way to escape everything. When Jack follows to Vietnam, the two brothers have to deal with the home issues. He literally is a one man wrecking crew and it’s easy to see where Kevin gets it from. Baker as Tess has something important to tell her parents but that’s difficult when the household is upside down and you can’t get next to your cactus parents!
Other cast include Faithe Herman as Annie Pearson, Caitlin Thompson as Madison, Porter Duong as Hien, Wendie Malick as Mary Damon, Joy Brunson as Shauna, Phylicia Rashad as Carol, Carl Lumbly as Abe, Alexandra Breckenridge as Sophie and Griffin Dunn as Nick Pearson.

us 3
The Special Features include THE AFTERSHOW on all Episodes and this is us AT Paleyfest 2019.
THIS IS US started out with a slowly lovely burn letting the story continually unravel about the Pearson family. I was actually hooked the very first episode and haven’t missed one since. There are shows that just reach deep inside and won’t let go and THIS IS US is that show for which millions don’t mind the hold. Instead, we want to know more and more. Granted we all waited for Jack’s death and when it happened it broke our hearts, but, like most people who watch the show, knew then as we know now that there is so much more of this family’s story left to be told.
Each of the characters brings something different to the series with intensity, humor, love and complexity to which we’d expect. I mean seriously, there isn’t a family out there who doesn’t have their problems and histories – it’s just that the Pearson’s have invited us in to see all of theirs – raw and unfiltered.
The fourth season of THIS IS US is about to begin on NBC and along with millions of others we have more questions we hope are answered but even if they all aren’t, we don’t mind sharing our evening with the Pearson’s. Actually, we don’t mind one little bit.
In the end – they are us all!

CANAL STREET is Thought Provoking on DVD

canal street dvd cover

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from director Rhyan LaMarr and Cinedigm comes the story of two young men and when the media get it wrong with CANAL STREET.

Kholi (Bryshere Y. Gray) is a young man is dealing with the emotional separation with his mother. Father Jackie Styles (Mykelti Williamson) is a lawyer who has started with a new firm while Kholi starts in a new school in Winnetka. Almost immediately he meets Zoey (Juani Feliz), a young lady with a glowing smile. At the same time he meets Brian Sudermill (Kevin Quinn) but their meeting isn’t such a good one.

The challenge of a one on one in basketball is given to Kholi and as they move closer to the bet being over, Brian offers up a bit of roughness. Zoey lets Kholi know that he should keep it together and don’t give in to what Brian and his group are dishing out. To ease tensions, Zoey invites him to a party and sees it as a way for everyone to get to know the new student.
canal 2

During music class, Kholi and Brian discover they share the same interests with an acknowledged fist pound. At the party, Kholi brings two friends and the night actually goes quite well, even to the point of Kholi giving Brian a ride home. On the drive with his friends in the back seat, the two young men discover even more about one another.

Dropping off Brian, Kholi is feeling good until he turns the car around down the street and comes up on Brians body in the middle of the street. Jumping out, his two friends tell him he must get back in because they will be blamed. Kholi refuses to leave and screams out for help. That’s when Brian’s father Bill (William R Moses) runs out of the house to find the two boys in the street.

Kholi is arrested and it sends shockwaves through the town as the public begins to take sides and the media is taking over. There are people using the situation for their own gain and those who believe there is more to the story – like the very disturbing truth.

Gray as Kholi is a young man who has dealt with a lot of hard knocks. Keeping his mother close in his mind, it is probably the only thing helping him while awaiting trial. It seems that everyone has an agenda except what is going to happen to Kholi. Gray looks like an angry young man but then again I think I’d have the same face if enough people tried to change the course of my life.
canal 1

Quinn as Brian is the school jock who is in a clique wanting to teach the new guy who is who. Of course when he realizes that he’s misjudging Kholi and as a new friendship actually begins to happen. It is what happens on the street in front of his house that he can’t do anything about.

Williamson as Jackie is a father who happens to be a lawyer but it doesn’t stop him from feeling every bit a father. When he realizes that all eyes are on him, he also knows they are judging a son he believes is innocent. Feliz as Zoey knows both boys and doesn’t appreciate being put on the stand to pit one against the other. Moses as Bill is a man grieving for the loss of his son. In his anger he believes what is easy to believe and cannot come to terms with his grief.

Other cast include Lance Reddick as Jerry Shaw, Michael Beach as Ronald Morgan, Jamie Hector as Pastor Sam Billings, Jon Seda as Det. Mike Watts, Will Yun Lee as Officer Hank Chu, Harry Lennix as DJ Terrance Palmer, Nora Dunn as Marge Sudermill, LaRoyce Hawkins as Amari Crawford, Ashley Black as Ashley, Rachel Cerda as Det. Regan, Katie Chang as Elizabeth Chu, and Mekhi Phifer as Prosecutor A.J. Canton. There are also cameos by Don Benjamin, Casper Smart, Da Brat, Charlamagne Tha God, Emily Walker, DeStorm Power, HeadKrack, and Angela Lee.

The company’s vast content library boasts over 52,000 feature films and television episodes. To learn more please visit http://www.cinedigm.com.

I am purposely being vague about this review because I want the viewer to take it in for themselves. With the tide of shootings in our country and the stories out in the media before the facts are in, CANAL STREET is a perfect example of it all. Finding myself with a case of the head shakes, it is everyone talking about something and making judgements before the facts are in.

The worst part of it is that it is the media in all forms that consistently do exactly that. Instead of focusing on investigating the true facts it is easy to cast dispersions here and there. CANAL STREET forces everyone to take a look at themselves if they are part of the problem or part of the solution.
canal 3

I would use this film in high school classrooms if I could because although it is about two young men, it is also about how those two young men treat each other and how all of that can be a catalyst for pain and suffering where there doesn’t need to be.

In the end – guilty until proven innocent!

Rey in 1941, Curious George remains one of the most beloved classics in children’s literature, television and film with more than 108 episodes of the Emmy award-winning animated series on PBS and over 80 million books in print worldwide in 26 languages. Not bad for a little curious monkey!

CURIOUS GEORGE: Royal Monkey features four new songs that are so much fun to listen to. What makes this piece so much fun is watching it with my granddaughter who delighted in every moment which in turn delighted me!

This is quite an adventure for George as well as discovering that Philippe learning that there is more to life than being waited on. CURIOUS GEORGE: Royal Monkey is full of fun, life lessons, color and song. That’s what we have come to expect from everything George.

What strikes me even more is that the film teaches youngsters of all ages that we are not so different even if the geography is. George learns to appreciate his friendship with Ted and Philippe discovers that there is something to having fun after all.

The relationship between the King and Princess Isabella is also very precious and the changes they make are only for the funner and better. There is certainly nothing wrong with a little silly in royal life, just ask George.

In the end – Curious George is making a royal debut!

MAYDAY Brings Mystery in Mid-Air

Mayday DVD

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from director Massimiliano Cerchi and Lionsgate comes a odd happenings on a flight that needs a MAYDAY.

Adam Anderson (Michael Pare) is an air marshal on a flight from Los Angeles to London. They aren’t in the air long before something mysterious begins to happen, passengers go missing. Penny Tillman’s (Elise Muller) husband disappears after the cabin lights flash! Anderson alerts the pilots but also questions the other passengers about what they saw.

Everyone begins to get a little edgy and tensions rise when there doesn’t seem to be any answers. Stewardess’ Lynn (Chanel Ryan) and Aeryn (Sadie Katz) are trying to keep their panic under control. The only passengers that seem to be unaffected by it all are Rochelle (Crystal Santos) who tells Anderson the story about death and Smokey (Scott Engrotti).

mayday 4

Looking for answers, passenger Nero (Michael Wainwright) is in a world all his own and everyone notices. Anderson gets a hold of a briefcase he has and finds a book on the occult that may tell the story. Aeryn notices that those who disappear aren’t belted into their seat so everyone starts out belted in but when the aircraft begins to shake and flash, total panic and the lights go out.

Once they come back on, the only people left are Anderson, Lynn, Aeryn, Smokey, Rochelle, Dr. Singh (Raj Kala), and co-pilot David Esparza (Carlos Mendez) but that doesn’t last long. Oddly enough it is Smokey who understands the book found in Nero’s briefcase.

Now everyone knows they are dealing with a shape-shifter and no one can be trusted.

Pare as Anderson is such a talent that has hardly been given the roles he so richly deserves. As the air marshal he is trying to keep everyone cool and focused on not losing anyone else. Ryan and Katz as Lynn and Aeryn are as nervous as two cats on a hot tin roof and every time the lights flash it sets their finger nails on edge.

Santos as Rochelle is creepier than I could imagine any passenger being. I mean seriously, how is she not freaking out? Engrotti as Smokey is the guy who seems to understand what is happening and doesn’t mind jumping in to help. Kala as Dr. Singh jumps in to help get what ever is on the ship – off!

Mayday 1

Other cast include Larry Fleming as Mr. Chase, Christopher Drummond as Mark Tillman, Jack Waggon as Ace, Wilfred Lopez as Benjamin and Bernadette Perez as Susan.

Lionsgate is a global leader in motion picture production and distribution for theatres, television, home entertainment and more. Theatre franchises include THE HUNGER GAMES, and DIVERGENT along with JOHN WICK. Now, adding this film to it’s 16,000 motion picture and television titles you can see everything coming soon as well as available now at http://www.lionsgate.com.

MAYDAY mixes mysticism with a flight that could possibly be doomed. There are different twists and turns that kept me wondering what could possibly happen next. Then again, as long as Pare is onboard I know I’m good with it.

It’s a flight filled with terror and things that go bump aboard and although I personally don’t want to be on that flight, I don’t mind seeing it on film.

In the end – terror flies high!

THE REFLECTING SKIN is a Film of Twisted Brilliance

reflect cover

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from Film Movement Classics and writer/director Philip Ridley is the stunning classic THE REFLECTING SKIN.

Seth Dove (Jeremy Cooper) is a young man living in 1950s Idaho farmland country with parents Luke (Duncan Fraser) and Ruth (Sheila Moore). The days are long and Seth spends time with friends Eben (Codie Wilbee) and Kim (Evan Hall). Three young boys together sometimes brings about mischief.

One such gathering the boys pull a prank on neighbor lady Dolphin Blue (Lindsay Duncan) and Seth feels momentary guilt. Back at home the young boy deals with a mother who treats him in almost sadistic ways and finds a bit of solace with his father who speaks rarely. Trying to talk with him, Luke introduces his son to the idea of vampires in a book he is reading.

reflect 1

Seth is in trouble about a frog incident and must go to Dolphin to apologize. She tells him a little about herself and in the midst of a joke that he takes wrong decides she is a vampire. Eben goes missing so Seth and Kim decide to sneak into the neighbor’s house to see what she may be hiding. After a fright, he runs home and accidentally finds his friend.

That sets his parents on edge and disaster comes from it with a town that holds a grudge on a past secret. This brings home Seth’s older brother Cameron (Viggo Mortensen) who finds himself taken with Dolphin Blue. Now that his mother is in a state, the boy finds that he needs his brother even more.

But Cameron finds solace with Dolphin and tells her of the bomb experiments he was a part of in the war while Seth peeks in on them both. When he sees that his brother may be getting ill, he is more convinced Dolphin is a vampire killing his brother. More tragedy strikes the town and there are more questions than answers.

In that tragedy Seth believes he has found a way to save his brother from a monster that lives so close to home.

Cooper as the young Seth is absolutely brilliant for a young actor to play this very disturbing role. From the way he spoke to the characters clothing, Cooper made that secondary to his performance. Disturbing is too small a word for Seth yet it was impossible to take my eyes off of him.

reflect 2

Duncan as neighbor Dolphin Blue is beautiful, extraordinary and holds a solemn and strangely peaceful attitude toward her life but will let out a scream with ease. Her handling of Seth is sometimes amusing and its probably there conversation on the rode that amused me the most with its disturbing content.

Mortensen as Cameron is a young man who returns from war only to find that coming home is really the last thing he wanted to do. It is Dolphin that gives him light in a dark place and he embraces it immediately. This is one of Mortensen’s first roles and had I seen this film earlier I would have said then what I believe now and that is he has a presence on screen that is a mixture of tough, charming and painful all rolled into him.

Other cast include David Longworth as Joshua, Robert Koons as Sheriff Ticker, Jason Wolfe as Cadillac Driver, Walt Healy as the Old Man, Sherry Bie as Cassie, and Jeff Walker as Adam Blue.

Celebrating its 17th year in 2019, Film Movement has released more than 250 feature films and shorts culled from prestigious film festivals worldwide, and last year it had its first Academy Award-nominated film, THEEB. The DVD includes the Bonus Features of Angels & Atom Bombs: The Making of THE REFLECTING SKIN, Commentary with writer/director Philip Ridley and New Essay by Travis Crawford and Heather Hyche.

kinopoisk.ru

THE REFLECTING SKIN is a film with so many layers that eventually level into one. There is a strangeness, horror, mystery, intensity, beauty and a draw to go down the road of the story even if something tells us not to. Each character has fears of their own yet survival makes a convenient blinder.

Small towns have big secrets and this place has one that they use to quickly fill in the gap tragedy often leads. It isn’t important whether or not it’s the true; it makes whatever sadness permeates the people easier to serve up with their evening meals. The vampires are secondary to my way of thinking.

A film such as THE REFLECTING SKIN will leave its cinematic mark and I am thrilled to have had the chance to experience it.

In the end – sometimes terrible things happen quite naturall

VAULT Brings Famous Heist to DVD

vault cover

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from writer/director Tom DeNucci and Lionsgate comes a heist based on a true story of what happened in the VAULT.

Deuce (Theo Rossi) and Chucky (Clive Standen) are two robbers in 1975 Rhode Island who seem to have a knack of getting away with robberies. During one robbery, Deuce meets Karyn (Samara Wiley) and falls hard, so hard that he can’t wait for her to meet the family.

After getting popped for a robbery, Deuce and Chuck meet the Frenchman Gerry (Don Johnson) who is a tad upset with the Italian mafia, especially Raymond (Chazz Palminteri) and wants the boys to work for him. Once they are released, the boys case the business where there is a special bonded vault at Hudson Fine Furs & Storage. Deuce isn’t at all thrilled with the idea and wants to walk away.

A crew that include Buddy Providence (William Forsythe), Buddy Roxbury (Sean Ringgold) and Buddy Barrington (Eric Lutes) has been set up for them by Gerry. Karyn isn’t happy with Deuce distancing himself. She knows the job that Jerry is setting up is big and wants to walk away to start another life.

Detective Caretti (John Fiore) investigates the robbery that is now the biggest heist of $30 million in American history. Deuce takes off for with Karyn to Nevada after worrying that one of them Buddy’s goes missing. Trying to stay one step ahead of anyone that might be following them is starting to wear on them both.

Chucky shows up out of nowhere and now Deuce is even more aware of the dangers. They are still waiting to get their cut promised by Gerry as more of the heist crew begins to disappear. Karyn makes a move that forces Deuce to rethink how life got to this place and how to live what’s left of his own.

It is all getting out of hand!

Rossi as Deuce is a smart but small time crook who seems to be flying by the seat of his law breaking pants. This couldn’t be truer when he meets girlfriend Karyn during a robbery. Of course I will always remember Rossi for his role as Juice in the hit FX series Sons of Anarchy but as an actor he continues to takes roles that showcase what a talent he truly is. Here he is fast talking and easily swayed by his friendship with Chuck.

Standen as Chuck has a hard time not saying names during robberies but he’s about to change that with the Hudson heist. Talking Deuce into it is more of getting your buddy to help out of guilt especially if he really doesn’t want to take part. The robbery was the easy part and Standen as Chuck knows it’s what comes next that is hard.

Wiley as Karyn falls for Deuce the bad boy and wants a life with him. She knows he is a small time criminal and accepts it but what she doesn’t want is what follows them after the heist. Johnson as Gerry is plain creepy but talks the two friends into a plan that he knows will upset the mafia.

Palminteri as Raymond is completely absorbed with how the crime business is changing. He is keenly aware of what Gerry and keeps his ear to the public after the Hudson heist. You don’t get to be the head of a crime family by sitting around letting others keep secrets. Palminteri has always played these roles with ease and VAULT is no exception.

Other cast include Chuck Zito as Joey Bruno, Vincent Pastore as Frank, Gillian Williams as Jeanie, Armen Garo as Gus, Claudio Orefice as Ronnie, Burt Young as Don Ruggiero, Antonio Cupo as Dominic Ruggiero, Lala Kent as Edie, Dorthy Lyman as Ma and Ken Baltin as Abraham Levine.

The DVD Special Features include Deleted Scenes, Behind the Scenes of VAULT, Commentary with Director Tom DeNucci and Director of Photography Sam Eilertsen and Trailer Gallery.

VAULT is a true story and the heist brought out $34 million which in today’s market would be $100 million. Still, none of what was stolen was ever recovered!

This film brings fantastic cinematography and when a period piece is done, it is the costuming that adds such a richness and depth. From the hair, makeup, cars and era-language, it all adds to bringing a story that needed to be told and director DeNucci did it extremely well.

In the end – it’s a crime based on a true story!

jungle bunch

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to DVD from writer/director David Alaux and SHOUT! Kids Factory is the story of family, friendship and protecting the home of THE JUNGLE BUNCH.

It is another day in the jungle or is it? Tony the sloth (Frantz Confiac), Natasha the tiger (Marie-Christine Darah), Goliath the rhino (Alain Dorval) and Ricky the porcupine (also called The Champs) are chasing Igor the koala (Richard Darbois) through the jungle. Igor is up to no good and attempting to ruin the jungle for all who live their.

When he succeeds all the animals must find their own way. Natasha finds herself the foster-mother of Maurice (Philippe Bozo), a young penguin who takes to jungle life. Her ward has plans of his own as he grows to create a new team that fights for justice.

jungle 1

Mom Natasha isn’t too thrilled about Maurice’s goal but he sets out into the jungle to find others who want to be aprt of it. He brings his team including Junior the fish, Miguel the gorilla (Pascal Casanova), Gilbert the tarsier (Laurent Morteau) and Batricia the bat (Celine Montsarrat) and call themselves ‘The Jungle Bunch’.

Igor has been busy as well on his secluded island, he wants to get back and take on The Champs once again. When he discovers there is another justice fighting team in town he is equally thrilled. Especially when he learns Maurice is Natasha’s son.

The Jungle Bunch knows their new mission is to save the jungle and everything they love about their home. When Igor kidnaps Junior, it is Natasha that wants to put The Champs back together to save him. Feeling left out, Maurice realizes that he must do what ever it takes to rescue his family but with a little help from his friends.

Other characters include Emmanuel Curtil as Al the Toad, Paul Borne by Bob the Toad, Michel Mella as Fred the warthog, Jean-Philippe Puymartin as Snake, Barbara Tissier as Ping, and Alexis Tomassian as Pong.

SHOUT! Factory has grown into a tremendous multi-platform media company. Releasing new animated features such as the exquisite Long Way North, and the epic fantasy Beauty And The Beast. Also their own original horror film, Fender Bender gives fans a good scare. For more of what SHOUT Factor has to offer please visit www.shoutfactory.com.

The characters are all delightful and, well, animated! This is a story about many things but mainly that differences don’t seem to matter one bit to these jungle creatures. They love who they love and that includes Natasha taking in Maurice and Maurice taking in Junior.

The story of Igor being cast out because of the harm he wants to cause is believable in that the other animals would ban together to put him in his place. There is also a generational issue that I found a great theme to talk about. Natasha protecting her son caused her to say things that she should have thought about more carefully. Taking to heart the words of his mother was tough and a lesson to parents – even parents who have grown children.

It is a treasure when there is an animated film that actually brings family and community together like THE JUNGLE BUNCH. The actors truly bring the animals to life with their vocal performances. Oh don’t worry, there is plenty of fun to be had and my own family laughed a lot at the antics.

So gather up your own jungle herd with a big bowl of popcorn and enjoy a film that brings so much of everything we love animated films for!

In the end – things are getting wild!

SURVIVING BIRKENAU: The Dr. Susan Spatz Story

surviving cover

Jeri Jacquin

On DVD from Ron Small, the Holocaust Education Film Foundation and Dreamscape comes the story of the ultimate survivor with SURVIVING BIRKENAU: The Dr. Susan Spatz Story.

Dr. Spatz is a woman who has no problem telling her story exactly how it is. Born in Vienna, her parents moved to Berlin, Germany to work in their uncles’ greeting card company. The business was very successful and the family lived well. She recalls her father being a man who loved to dance and mother a woman who was always impeccably dressed.

In 1935, Jewish students had to leave state schools and she didn’t quite understand what was happening. In 1938, Hitler had taken control of their home country of Vienna, Austria. That is also when she noticed that Nazi soldiers were beginning to harass Jewish men and women in hideous ways.

That is when Susan’s father had to find a way out because visas were not to be had. In August 1939, her father left on the last plane to Brussels to settle while Susan and her mother waited. A town was created called Theresienstadt Bauschowitz and two months later it was inhabited by Jews. That was the beginning of the Jewish Council that became part of a selection committee which had one of her mothers’ friends there to help.

Once they learned that it wouldn’t help, Susan’s mother left and the young 19 year old girl stayed behind. In 1943 she was to be transferred by train through the large gates of what was to become Birkenau. Immediately everyone that arrived were processed, given clothing and tattooed. Her number is 34042.

Surviving 1

Food was scarce and lessons of being in the prison camp were every moment of their lives. The women prison guards, according to Susan, were worse than the male guards so they had to find solace with one another. Fate would come into play as she came into contact with a young girl she knew in Prague. That encounter helped her get to the administration offices and the construction department.

By 1944, Susan is sent on the Death March and the only thing that saved her was after being told quietly to load up on clothing and food or else they would not survive. Finally put on a train, they were once again told to huddle together and they would make it. She would see that others trains with people who froze in their train cars.

Staying alive they were finally liberated and when they came to an American checkpoint, the realization that the world didn’t know about extermination camps. Susan was finally free but where would she be able to go?

Speaking English would be another life saver for Susan as she was asked to work with the Americans. Through that she would learn the fate of her family and began the long road to finding a life of her own. She discovered her freedom, her voice and a new purpose for her life.

Dr. Susan Spatz has such an amazing story to tell and I absolutely was riveted to hear every moment of it. There is a steadiness or perhaps defiance in her voice that would not allow her to give in to her captors. There is nothing wrong with doing everything humanly possible to survive and Susan makes that clear by the choices she made in her three years in Birkenau.

It would be in her life after years in the concentration camp that seems so much more difficult. Susan even says that she was more afraid after Birkenau with what life was bringing her way but even before that part of her story was told I knew she would let nothing stop her from being free once again.

In the end – it is her story of survival during humanity’s darkest moments!
