MASTERMINDS Steals Laughs on Bluray

Jeri Jacquin

Planning to heist on Bluray and DVD this week from director Jared Hess and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is a plan put together by MASTERMINDS, sort of.

David (Zach Galifianakis) is a man of simple means. Having big dreams early in life, he has settled for a rather routine one as a driver for Loomis armored car service. Engaged to Jandice (Kate McKinnon) he is going along to get along while dreaming of a more adventurous time. His day got better the moment that Kelly (Kristen Wiig) walked through the Loomis doors.

Striking up a friendship with Kelly, it becomes clear that friendship is not all David sees with crush in his eyes. The two share talks and laughs together which is something he doesn’t have at home. Having lunch together in the Loomis lunchroom, Kelly gets in the face of the boss and she’s had enough. Walking out is the heartbreak David is use to as he goes back to his routine.

Kelly has other plans when partner Steve (Owen Wilson) want to get their hands on what is inside the vaults at Loomis. Devising a plan to get his grubby hands on the cash, he enlists Kelly talking her into using David’s feelings for her as a way in. After everything that can go wrong does go wrong, David still manages to escape with $17 million dollars. Kelly puts David on a plane to get away with the promise that she would join him as soon as the heat is off.

What she doesn’t know is that Steve has other plans which include a psychotic hit man Mike McKinney (Jason Sudeikis) who takes his job very seriously. Once David realizes what has happened, he puts the big girl panties on and makes a master plan of his own!

Galifianakis as David is simple and settled in the uniform wearing life. This is a character that he makes seem easy to play and perhaps it’s because we have caught glimpses of him before (which I don’t mind as long as it makes me laugh!). From the character of Alan in THE HANGOVER series of films to taking on Will Ferrell as Marty Huggins in THE CAMPAIGN, his way of getting laughs is by being the straight guy but in such a unique way that he really isn’t! The haircut kept me captivated the entire film!

Wiig as Kelly is an out spoken gal who isn’t going to take anything from her Loomis boss yet pretty much lets Steve lead her around for the sake of a few bucks. Using her feminine wiles to get David to do her bidding gives her several moments of pause about doing the right thing by a sweet guy who happens to be crushing on her. Wiig has made a successful career out of playing the victim while victimizing with her sheepish grin and innocent eyes.

Wilson as Steve – see douche bag in the dictionary and this guy’s picture would be right there. He uses everyone and everything letting the money get to his head. Wilson’s character just smooth talks everyone and isn’t about to let anyone take a dollar from his nice home filled with drums of money.

McKinnon as Jandice had me howling with laughter. It is talent to make someone laugh using expression and body language but it is an EXCEPTIONAL  talent who can cause laughing by barely using any facial expressions at all. This is a jewel character and McKinnon embraces it to the point of perfection. I lost it totally during the scenes between her, Galifianakis and the photographer. I’m going to bet there are tons of outtakes just with her and I’d love to see them.

Sudeikis as McKinney the psycho hit man is another brilliant character. A hit man who finds friendship at the end of a silencer is a character that deserves applause.  I think maybe he and Jandice should get together because there could be magic there. Sudeikis gets a chance to be cheesy, crazy and a friend all at the same time which I don’t think is a bad gig at all.

Other cast include Mary Elizabeth Ellis as Michelle, Ken Marino as Doug, Leslie Jones as Detective, Devin Ratray as Runny, Jill Jane Clements as Beryl and Daniel Zacapa as Quintero.

MASTERMINDS is a slapstick comedy filled with the silliest characters yet – it works! Galifianakis leads this band of merry masterminds and pretty much steals the show. Get ready to use every range of giggling, chuckling, snorting, and laughing in your arsenal because the jokes are either in-your-face or “what did he/she just say?” I appreciate that subtle sense of comedy and MASTERMINDS delivers.

This is a film that is worthy of ordering pizzas, a couple of six packs, call all your comedy loving friends and make a movie night of it (they will thank you!). MASTERMINDS is quirky, funny, twisted, and, like the heist, a simple plan for a good time. The Bluray & DVD comes in at an hour and a half with Special Features that include The Imperfect Crime.

In the end – someone is about to get stupid rich!

QUEEN OF KATWE Brings a Champion to Bluray

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to Bluray and Digital HD from Disney and director Mira Nair is the story of hope, belief, love and family with QUEEN OF KATWE.

Robert Katende (David Oyelowo) is a soccer coach who also teaches the children who live in Kampala, Uganda to play chess. In the slum area of Katwe is Phiona (Madina Nalwanga), a ten-year-old girl who watches the game being played and quickly picks up on the techniques. Katende is amazed at how well she does along with the other children.

Phiona’s mother Nakku (Lupita Nyong’o) is worried about her children. Raising them alone with very little income she is concerned that Katende is filling their heads with big, impossible dreams. Phiona’s brother Brian (Martin Kabanza) and sister Night (Taryn Kyaze) are also troubling Nakku driving a wedge in the family.

As Katende begins to take his chess group into competitions, it becomes clear these children may be different but talented. Standing out is Phiona who has the dream of one day getting away from the slums of Katwe and creating a life that will make her mother proud.

When her competition chances are shot down, Phiona falls into the belief that she is not meant to live a better life. Sometimes you have to fall before the best of us all can rise!

Nalwanga as Phiona is a tough little girl and she has the expressive face to prove it. She is tough on the outside because she has to be but inside her dreams are just as wonderful. Nalwanga takes this role and makes it believable and amazing.

Oyelowo as Katende is an actor that always seems to embrace roles that are so thoughtful and in QUEEN OF KATWE he once again is riveting to watch. Portraying a man who thought more of others than himself, it is a heartwarming performance.

Nyong’o as Nakku Harriet is a mother who wants what’s best for her children yet knows the reality of life. Never wanting her children to be disappointed or let down, she shields them but in a way that is detrimental to all of their lives. I enjoyed Nyong’o’s performance as this young mother who tries to believe and is shown how by her children.

Other cast include: Ronald Ssemaganda as Ivan, Ethan Nazario as Benjamin, Nikita Waligwa as Gloria, Edgar Kanyike as Joseph, Esther Tebandeke as Sara Katende and Peter Odeke as Mr. Barumba.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment began distributing under its own label in 1980 and continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. QUEEN OF KATWE is an inspirational film about the success of a young girl who might otherwise have gone unnoticed and also of her struggle and determination. Watching the family change the way they think, in part because of Katende, is filled with forgiveness that was necessary for them all to succeed.

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS Stuns on Bluray and a Talk with Director Derek Cianfrance

Jeri Jacquin

On Bluray from DreamWorks Pictures is one of my favorite films of 2016. THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS is a film that is captures everything about being a flawed and frail human being. Surrounded by only the ocean, a lighthouse and miles of nothingness, THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS doesn’t confound with special effects but instead dares us to feel – everything!

Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) is a man looking for isolation after experiencing war. Taking a job as a lighthouse keeper he finds exactly what he needs. In the middle of the ocean stands a lighthouse on an island where he beings the process of inner healing. What he doesn’t expect is to fall in love with the beautiful Isabel Graysmark (Alicia Vikander) who shares his love of isolation.

The two begin their lives at the lighthouse with the hope of having a family. When it becomes clear that Isabel only suffers from trying to have a child, a drifting row boat brings them a miracle baby.

Their life becomes even happier as the years roll like the waves they are surrounded by. While visiting family, Tom sees a mysterious woman named Hannah (Rachel Weisz) who has the potential to change all of their lives.

I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with writer/director Derek Cianfrance about what drew him to the film, the process to find the perfect place to film and his hopes for what the audience will take away from the film.

Jeri Jacquin: Thank you for talking the time to talk with me today about the film

Derek Cianfrance: You’re very welcome

JJ: I wanted to first say that THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS is absolutely brilliant on so many levels. It’s beautiful, moving, original and cinematically stunning.

DC: Well thank you I do so appreciate that, my mother-in-law agrees with you.

JJ: That’s because she’s got amazing taste. Can you tell me how you became involved with the film?

DC: Coming off my film A PLACE BEYOND THE PINES (2012) I was looking for an experience doing an adaptation and was reading scripts that I wasn’t making a connection to. I had a meeting with DreamWorks because Steven Spielberg was a big fan of BLUE VALENTINE (2010) so they asked me to come in and talk about what was next for me. There was this pile of books they gave me when I left and the book on top was A Light Between Oceans and I was intrigued. I thought about it cinematically, about a lighthouse keeper and thought it mirrored the experience of being in a movie. A light shining out projecting through the darkness and so I started reading the book.

JJ: What about the book touched you?

DC: I just felt it strongly had the themes of family, forgiveness, legacy, paternity and relationships that I have been exploring in my own movies. I felt like it had this rock solid narrative that I was really interested in exploring. It took me about a year to get it and I had the book memorized by that point. It was just a total privilege to be working on the film.

JJ: That is a big part of what I so love about the film. First of all I love the isolation idea of lighthouses and I’m sure many have wondered about that life at one time or another. Even more so is that there isn’t an emotion in this film that doesn’t illicit strong responses. When there is sadness you feel it strongly, when there is moral conflict it is so intense, when there are moments of joy you embrace it and I have to say I was emotionally exhausted by the films end.

DC: For me too!

JJ: Exactly for you! Was it difficult to find this amazing location? How long did it take you to find it?

DC: It took me about six months to find the location because it is fictitious in the book. I wanted to find a place where I would be isolated with my actors and I started out going to Australia going to every island lighthouse I could find. We were almost ready to shoot off the coast of Tasmania when another film came in. New Zealand was close by and they had an offer for us to bring the film there and the first thing I did was go to every lighthouse island I could find and there were great locations. So one by one it was either the lighthouse was too short or there was an indigenous population of endangered lizards were on the island so no human beings could go there. Finally, the very last place I looked was this place called Cape Campbell and initially I was resistant to go there because it is all about process for my actors wanting them to feel and have an emotional experience. The problem was it was literally hour’s long drive down a dirt road to get to the lighthouse location.

JJ: Seems as if the location spoke to you in an important way.

DC: Absolutely, I wanted to keep the film very true to the location so when it came time to present it there were questions about how to get a large crew there. That’s when I said I would rather have 10 crew people living at the location than 30 hauling back and forth. We talked it over in great detail how to make it work.

JJ: Did you have to talk with the actors about that decision as well?

DC: Yes, I actually called Michael Fassbender and told him my idea. I explained that living at the shooting location would bring the actors an amazing experience. Being surrounded by the wind, waves, and the isolation that his character is feeling is a major part of telling this story. He told me he’d give me a day to show him how it would all come together and seven weeks later we filmed an amazing story.

JJ: What do you want people who see THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS to take away from the film?

DC: When putting a book like The Light Between Oceans on the screen it is important to make sure every aspect of the story is there. There are of course very strong themes in this film of love and family and those ties that keep us together. I think that the one thing I hope audiences take from the film is that of forgiveness.

JJ: Congratulations and thank you Derek for bringing such a beautiful film to us all.

I have read the novel by M.L. Stedman and believe director Cianfrance took what I saw in my mind and transformed it straight to screen. Fassbender, Vikander and Weisz bring such depth of emotion laying everything out bare from these broken characters that, at times, it is heartbreaking to watch. In other words, it is everything I want from a story.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to see THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS then pick up your own copy on Bluray and Digital HD. This is a film to be experienced at such a deep level that I highly recommend tissue.

In the end – love demands everything!

Disney’s PINOCCHIO Brings Memories and Beauty to Bluray for Families!

Jeri Jacquin

This week on Bluray, DVD and Digital HD from Disney’s Signature Collection is a film that has become one of the most beloved classics in animation with PINOCCHIO!

The story is told by the one and only Jiminy Cricket (voiced by Cliff Edwards) about Geppetto (Christian Rub) is a creative man of many talents. One such talent is creating amazing puppets that almost look real. One such puppet is Pinocchio (Dickie Jones) who Geppetto wishes were a real boy.

The wish is heard and the Blue Fairy (Evelyn Venable) helps the puppet boy come to life – sort of. Telling Pinocchio that he must prove himself to be “brave, truthful and unselfish” to become a total real boy, the Blue Fairy assigns Jiminy Cricket to be his conscience.

That proves to be a cricket-full when Pinocchio meets Honest John the Fox and Gideon the cat. Believing he is just having fun with his new friends, he has captured the eye of Stromboli. Wanting to make money off the marionette, it becomes clear that when Pinocchio wants to go home that it isn’t going to happen.

Jiminy Cricket calls on the help of the Blue Fairy and when she asks Pinocchio why he is not in school, he lies and with it a nose growth! Promising the Blue Fairy he won’t do it again, she gentle tells him that this will be the last help he receives.

But Honest John and Gideon are still looking for misbehaving lads to take to and they once again meet Pinocchio and talk him into going along. Disaster strikes when Jiminy discovers what really happens to the boys who follow Honest John and Gideon. Escaping to home, Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket find a letter that Geppetto has gone looking for the marionette boy.

Swallowed by the whale Monstro, Pinocchio jumps into the sea to find Geppetto and although they escape, everything changes in the crash of a wave. It is in this moment that life changes for them all!

PINOCCHIO first came to the screen in 1940 after the success of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. Taken from the Italian children’s story The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi it has continued the test of time. Seventy-six years later, this film has captured the imagination of each generation since it’s release.

PINOCCHIO brings through the years other milestones such as being the first animated feature to win an Academy Award for Best Music-Original Score and Best Music-Original Song for ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’. That song alone captures the heart and gives it a special hug because dreams do come true!

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment began distributing under its own label in 1980 and continues to bring quality programming to kids and kids at heart. Home of the most beloved animated features including SNOW WHITE, PINOCCHIO and SLEEPING BEAUTY to name a few is what keeps families coming back for more. To see what is currently available to add to your own family library please visit. for their At Home titles!

The Bluray includes a Brand New Version of Oswald Short Poor Pappa, the Bonus Extras of The Pinocchio Project: When You Wish Upon a Star – Today’s hottest music influencers create their own version of the iconic song, Walt’s Story Meetings: Pleasure Island – Recently discovered original artwork reveals a Pleasure Island that never made it to the big screen.

Also included is In Walt’s Words: Pinocchio – Through recordings of rare interviews, Walt discusses the magical making of this legendary classic, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in “Poor Papa” – When the storks bring Oswald’s family a special delivery, his house is soon overrun by a rambunctious brood of baby bunnies and so much more.

This film has made it through four generations of my own family and I have no doubt that it will continue on with my grandchildren’s children. There are so many themes that reach into families with love, trust, learning, mistakes and most of all forgiveness.

Wrapping all of this wonderful story in animation that has been brought to Bluray with a sharpness that is mesmerizing means the legacy that PINOCCHIO brings will continue. This is an absolute must for everyone’s Disney home library!

In the end – when you wish upon a star your dreams come true!

THE BIRTH OF A NATION Arrives on Bluray

Jeri Jacquin

On Bluray, DVD and Digital HD from writer/director Nate Parker and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment comes the story of change when it comes to the THE BIRTH OF A NATION.

Nat Turner (Nate Parker) is a man who has had a destiny since he was a small boy. Unfortunately being a slave in the antebellum South to plantation owner Samuel Turner (Armie Hammer) leaves him little time to discover what that destiny is.

Taught to read by Samuel’s sister Elizabeth (Penelope Ann Miller), Nat begins preaching the word to the other slaves on the plantation. Nat also becomes as indispensable as a slave can be to Samuel and talks his master into purchasing a slave named Cherry (Aja Naomi King).

When money becomes hard for Samuel, he doles out Nat’s preaching services to other plantations as a way to deal with unruly slaves. Feeling as if he is truly going against God, Nat finds solace in his marriage to Cherry. That is until ruthless men led by Raymond Cobb (Jackie Earle Haley) bring her close to death.

Now Nat begins to question himself and what he was told as a child. Speaking with other slaves he gathers a small army with the intention of reaching freedom at all costs – even if freedom means death!

Parker as Nat Turner is a man who lives in a world of duality. Wanting freedom for his people he also must do what he is told or the consequences could kill. Parker plays this character with the pain of those two choices throughout the film.

Hammer as plantation owner Samuel is a straight forward owner of people with making money by their use any way possible. Trying to bring honor to the once celebrated name of Turner, he discovers all too quickly that the memories of his father’s friends are very short and stinging.

Miller as Elizabeth is pained by what is happening to Nat but for a woman of that era nothing could be done. She sees something special in Nat and does what she can to cultivate learning. Elizabeth knows what her brother is doing is wrong and is shows on every inch of her face.

King as Cherry captures Nat’s heart fairly quickly. Their love for one another is very touching and when tragedy befalls Cherry it is far past heartbreaking. Haley as Cobb is just a vicious human being who has no conscience nor care for humanity. That is a difficult role to play yet Haley brings it strongly.

Other cast include Mark Boone Junior as Reverend Zalthall, Colman Domingo as Hark, Aunjanue Ellis as Nancy, Dwight Henry as Isaac Turner, Esther Scott as Bridget, Roger Smith as Isaiah and Gabrielle Union as young Esther.

SPLIT Brings Stellar Performances and Fright!

Jenise Jacquin

In 1999, writer/director M. Night Shyamalan decided to creep out the entire planet with a little film called THE SIXTH SENSE. Of course I was a mere gal of 17 when the film came out and I immediately knew I was watching something pretty spectacular. It was a creative, original and definitely kept me riveted from beginning to the shocking end.

A year later in 2000, UNBREAKABLE hit the screen and of course I had to be a part of anything Bruce Willis would be involved in. I watched it but felt it was more oriented toward guys leaving me out of the loop a little but I still loved Willis no matter what.

Then the worst happened! The following films after UNBREAKABLE seemed to become a tad gimmicky to my way of thinking. Even SIGNS which I had hoped would knock it out of the park just seem to fall short of the originality and creativity of THE SIXTH SENSE. After that, any Shyamalan film coming my way just bounced off my ‘have to watch’ radar.

Now, in 2017, Shyamalan is back in theatres and I am here to say that SPLIT gave me the creative storyline and originality I associated with him back in 1999.

The film star James McAvoy (be still my heart!) as a man who has several serious problems named Dennis, Patricia, Hedwig, Barry, Orwell, Jade, The Beast and Kevin Wendell Crumb. One day he kidnaps Casey (Haley Lu Richardson), Marcia (Jessica Sula) and Claire (Anya Taylor-Joy) taking them to a dark and dismal location. He kidnaps the girls with a plan but Claire is an extra not planned on. It is clear this man has a problem with girls and when they stick together against him; their main goal is to escape.

Claire realizes that this man has the voice of a young boy name Hedwig and tries to be convincing about the need to escape. It also becomes clear that this man is responsible for different personalities who have different agendas. One by one each girl tries to escape and their different tactics keep their captor on edge. What they don’t know is that something sinister called The Beast is more terrifying than any of the personalities they have ever seen.

McAvoy portraying all of these different personalities gives him the opportunity to cement his status as an actor. The most interesting thing about him is that he takes roles that are as equally diverse as the personalities in SPLIT (except perhaps not quite as frightening). I enjoyed the transition between the characters – from the sweet, helpful innocent to the creepy-man-next-door but what I loved most is the spots of creepy/mean characters, there are moments of compassion. Especially when he becomes Kevin because there is a moment where you feel for him and what he is going through. In the short time he is Kevin you feel his emotions down to the core and forget everything that came before it. No matter what he does he’s a sexy man – call me!

Taylor-Joy as Claire is the character most involved with the splits. She is secluded and misunderstood even before she is kidnapped with the girls and is perfect for this role. It’s a good life lesson actually for teens that you never really know what is going on. Claire is actually very smart but has been through a lot and does a great job of hiding it. Taylor-Joy gives the “weird kid” persona something to think about but in a calm, collective, peaceful and beautiful kind of way. You will see exactly what I mean from scene one!

Richardson as Casey was the reason Claire was in the car in the first place so we blame her for everything…period. Sula as Marcia is the follower and she had no guts so there isn’t about to be no glory. Even when Claire tells her to stop putting them all in danger, Marcia just does what Marcia does.

Betty Buckley as Dr. Karen Fletcher gets a personal shout out from me. She kept all the characters in line and respectfully sought out to help each one individually. I believe her character is one that sticks out because her presence made me feel like I was in the film not just watching it. Buckley captures different aspects of film because it made me root for her who rooted for Kevin and the other personalities. She had a huge role in a way in how the character behaves because she calls him out when he tries to put something over on everyone. I just plain out enjoyed her performance.

Other cast includes   Sebastian Arcelus as Casey’s Father, Brad William Henke as Uncle John, Neal Huff as Mr. Benoit, Robert Michael Kelly as Joe, and Jon Rainey as Dr. Clerque.

I really did think the film was creepy, original, suspenseful and I most definitely would watch it again. It isn’t a bloody horror film but a suspenseful and smart telling of a man with a serious problem. The different ideas and characters always kept me aware but still creeped out wondering what was going to happen next and who is going to show up at the door – and when you are going to meet The Beast. The cinematography lends itself to the creepiness as well.

I’m making sure to leave tons of information out of this review because this is the film you want to experience for yourself and personally I hate when people give to much away – its more fun to discover the creepy within us all right? SPLIT will definitely give the audience just that and don’t be in such a hurry to leave your seat because nothing is ever quite finished the way you might expect.

In the end – Kevin has 23 personalities and the 24th is about to be unleashed!

TRESPASS AGAINST US Crosses the Line of Family Conflict

Jeri Jacquin

Coming to theatres this Friday from director Adam Smith and A24 is a film about the power struggle in a family with TRESPASS AGAINST US.

Chad Cutler (Michael Fassbender) is a man trying to break away from father Colby (Brendan Gleeson). He wants something different for son Tyson (Georgie Smith), daughter Mini (Kacie Anderson) and wife Kelly (Lyndsey Marshal). That is difficult when the family has a history of criminal behavior.

Behind his father’s back, Chad attempts to obtain a permanent home for his wife and kids. Seeing how Colby is pulling Tyson towards the same criminal behavior he experienced, Chad is more determined to do what is needed to protect his family.

But Colby is well aware in every aspect of his family. Realizing that Chad is pulling away, he sets into motion events that prove once and for all he rules the Cutler clan with an iron fist and metal will.

Chad makes one stand to break away but it might not be enough!

Fassbender as Chad gives the right amount of vulnerability being under the thumb of a very tyrant father. Understanding his upbringing was just how it was doesn’t mean he believes it should be the same for his own children. Fassbender gives this character heart that is purely based on a fear he must overcome at all cost. This is a role that Fassbender does well and makes look easy at the same time.

Gleeson as Colby has the believability to be this brutal without shedding a single drop of blood. There is such a coldness to this character and although Colby wants to be seen as a loving father and grandfather, those close to him know better. There is this fine line between taking care of the family and crossing the family. Gleeson gives the character grit and an eerie creepiness that I’d stay away from!

Marshall as Kelly knows that Chad is stuck between a father and a hard place yet even when she’s upset, it doesn’t stop her support of her husband. Smith as Tyson is a young man easily influenced by grandfather Colby, especially being of the age where listening to a parent is usually met with heavy resistance.

Other cast include: Rory Kinnear as PC Lovage, Killian Scott as Kenny, Sean Harris as Gordon Bennett, Kingsley Ben-Adir as Sampson, Gerard Kearns as Lester, Tony Way as Norman, Barry Keoghan as Windows, Ezra Khan as Jamail, Alan Williams as Noah and Anastasia Hille as Mrs. Crawley.

TRESPASS AGAINST US is a film stripped away of a ‘normal’ family life and instead straight survival. The head of this family is clearly set on controlling every aspect of their lives and expects no questions to be asked. The fact that their survival depends on criminal activity doesn’t seem to bother Gleeson’s character one little bit. Instead it is almost as if he taunts the authorities with a ‘challenge me if you dare’ attitude.

It is Fassbender’s portrayal of Chad that is extremely complex filled with the duality in the father-son relationship going in both directions. Dealing with his father and trying to be a good father, Fassbender shows that the history we come from doesn’t have to be the future he wants for his own family.

What makes this film riveting is that there isn’t anything else here to distract audiences from the bare relationships between this family and what it is all based on. The story is bold as director Smith lets nothing get in his way of telling the tale in its rawest form.

In the end – blood is a brutal bond!
