Premiering on HBO April 9th is Academy Award Nominee and director Liz Garbus documentary about on of the most iconic women in the world and news trusted son with NOTHING LEFT UNSAID: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper.
This film tells the story of Gloria Vanderbilt, a woman who has lived her life in the limelight from the very early age. Being born in the Vanderbilt family with father Reginald, it would be a family discord between her mother Gloria Morgan and Aunt Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney after Reginald’s death. Believing the child wasn’t being raised correctly, a very public court battle that also involved nanny Emma Kieslich broke a family apart.
Little Gloria would grow up seeking a life of her very own but it wouldn’t be out of the spotlight. Marrying young and becoming a mother, husband Pat DiCicco was abusive. Her marriage to Leopold Stokowski also ended in divorce, her third marriage to film director Sidney Lumet also ended in divorce.
It was her final marriage to Wyatt Emory Cooper; she gave birth to two sons Carter and Anderson Cooper. Tragedy would strike the marriage and with the passing of her oldest son.
Her career would constantly change beginning with studying art, then move to the fashion industry starting with scarves but it would be her line of designer jeans that would set the fashion world on fire. With ever pair of jeans, the Vanderbilt name could be seen on the back pocket. This was soon to be followed by a perfume line.
It seems the art world would call her back as many exhibits of her work have been shown. She also wrote her memoirs and novels as well as contributing to The New York Times, Vanity Fair and Elle magazine.
Gloria Vanderbilt has spent her life like no other!
TUBS OF POPCORN: I give NOTHING LEFT UNSAID: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper four tubs of popcorn out of five. I personally knew the history of this iconic women but this documentary fills in the details that I did not know. What moves me the most is son Anderson learning things about her family that even he didn’t know before. His reactions are priceless yet loving towards his mother.
At the age of 92, Gloria Vanderbilt shows no signs of stopping. She made it clear that her life has had its moments and life lessons but it is clear she lived it her way. I am absolutely thrilled to have seen this documentary and know that Ms. Vanderbilt is a woman I could hang out with any day of the week.
Even discussing her life with son Anderson, she makes no excuses and makes it clear that her choices were her own and so were the consequences. I love that about a person who can see that life has many paths and we don’t always take the right one. It’s called living!
Anderson asking his mother questions about her life felt so endearing and filled with love for her that, at times, it felt as if I was intruding on private moments. Sharing such private memories is such an honor for anyone who sees this piece of filmmaking. The photographs bring the story to life along with the telling by Ms. Vanderbilt.
